David Storey

David Malcolm Storey (born 13 July 1933 in Wakefield, Yorkshire) is an English playwright, screenwriter, award-winning novelist and a former professional rugby league player.

Early life

Storey was the son of a Yorkshire miner and was educated at QEGS Wakefield. He continued his education at the Slade School of Fine Art, London and supported himself there by playing rugby for Leeds RLFC (now Leeds Rhinos) where he played half-back for the A-team, with occasional appearances with the first. His plays include The Restoration of Arnold Middleton, The Changing Room, Cromwell, Home and Stages.

Storey was a trumpet player who wrote the screenplay for This Sporting Life (1963), directed by Lindsay Anderson, adapted from Storey's first novel of the same name, originally published in 1960, which won the 1960 Macmillan Fiction Award. The film was the beginning of a long professional association with Anderson, whose film version of Storey's play In Celebration was released as part of the American Film Theatre series in 1975. Home and Early Days (both starred Sir Ralph Richardson; Home also starred Sir John Gielgud) were made into television films.

David Storey (politician)

Sir David Storey (18 August 1856 – 27 July 1924) was an Australian politician.

He was born in County Monaghan, Ireland, to farmer Robert Storey and Margaret Colvin. After working for Lindsay Brothers Ltd he emigrated to Sydney in 1879, entering business as a department manager. He entered into his own partnership in 1881 and founded his own business in 1884, trading softgoods. Around 1883, in Leith, Scotland, he married Rachael Agnes Doig, with whom he had three sons. He was actively involved in the free trade movement, serving as secretary of the Freetrade and Land Reformist League. In 1894 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Free Trade member for Randwick. He joined the Liberal Reform Party in 1901 and was involved in the foundation of the Nationalist Party in 1917. He was an honorary minister from 1916 to 1919, when he became Minister for Public Health. In 1920 he was elevated to the New South Wales Legislative Council. Storey was knighted in 1923 but died at Randwick the following year.

David Storey (artist)

Threadneedle Prize finalist David Storey (born 2 August 1954, Workington, Cumbria, England) is a British painter and graphic artist. Known initially for his stark 'Moholy Nagy' inspired album covers and particularly his work for the 2-Tone record label (1979–1985).

Biography

David Storey spent his childhood in the dramatic landscape of the English Lake District before going on to study art at London's Hornsey College of Art (now Middlesex University). He began working in the music industry in 1977, when he joined Sir Elton John's label, The Rocket Record Company, as a designer from 1977 to 1979.

Storey then moved to Chrysalis Records (1979–1984) first as a designer and later as art director. His best known work from this period is the bold, innovative and influential designs he produced for the 2-Tone record label (a subsidiary of Chrysalis).

In 1986, David Storey became a founding member of the innovative and highly successful The Bureaux. This landmark collective of 20 artists and designers worked from a warehouse in London's Clerkenwell district.
