David Stern

David Joel Stern (born September 22, 1942) is the former commissioner of the National Basketball Association. He started with the Association in 1966 as an outside counsel, joined the NBA in 1978 as General Counsel, and became the league's Executive Vice President in 1980. He became Commissioner in 1984, succeeding Larry O'Brien. He is credited with increasing the popularity of the NBA in the 1990s and 2000s.

Stern has served on the Rutgers University Board of Overseers and is a Chair Emeritus of the Board of Trustees of Columbia University. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

On October 25, 2012, Stern announced that he would step down as NBA commissioner on February 1, 2014, 30 years to the day after beginning his tenure as commissioner. His deputy, Adam Silver, is his successor. On February 14, 2014, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced that Stern would be a member of its 2014 induction class.

Early life

David Stern was born on September 22, 1942 in New York City, New York. He grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey in a Jewish family, and is a graduate of Teaneck High School. Stern attended Rutgers University, where in 1960 he pledged to the Sigma Delta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity. He graduated as a history student in 1963, graduated from Columbia Law School in 1966, and was admitted to the bar in New York later that year after passing the state's bar examination.

David Stern is Executive Director of Equal Justice Works, a national nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC working to create a just society by mobilizing the next generation of lawyers committed to equal justice. He is former president of the Stern Family Fund, a private foundation that supported policy-oriented government and corporate accountability projects.

Professional career

Mr. Stern graduated from Union College in 1982 and the Georgetown University Law Center in 1985. Following law school, he clerked for two federal judges in Baltimore and worked for a public interest law firm before joining Equal Justice Works, then known as the National Association of Public Interest Law (NAPIL). Hired in 1992 to create a postgraduate fellowship program for the organization, Mr. Stern became the executive director in 1995.

In the 16 years he has served as head of Equal Justice Works, the organization’s annual budget grow more than fivefold from $2 million to $11 million, and the number of postgraduate fellowships has grown from 20 to more than 180 lawyers who are in the field. Today, Equal Justice Works manages the largest postgraduate fellowship program in the country. Nearly all of the American Bar Association-accredited law schools in the U.S. are members of Equal Justice Works.

David Stern is an American conductor born on May 21, 1963. He is the son of violinist Isaac Stern.

Biography

Having studied at the Juilliard School, he started his career as an assistant to John Eliot Gardiner, then as principal conductor of Concerto Köln. At the same time, David Stern collaborated with modern orchestras such as the Kammerorchester Basel and the London Mozart Players with which he regularly tours. He also conducted various ensembles such as the Boston Haydn & Haendel Society, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Seoul Symphony Orchestra, the New Moscow Symphony Orchestra, the Gürzenich Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris and the Orchestra Nazionale de la RAI.

In 2003 he founded the Opera Fuoco ensemble, with which he explores a large, mainly lyrical, repertoire using instruments of the era. David Stern was Music Director of the St. Gallen Symphony Orchestra and Opera (Switzerland) until the 2011/12 season when he was replaced by Otto Tausk. He currently serves as Music Director of the Israel Opera.

David E. Stern

Rabbi David Eli Stern (born August 1961) is the senior rabbi at Temple Emanu-El of Dallas, the largest synagogue in the South/Southwest United States and the third-largest in the Union for Reform Judaism. He was selected as the 26th most influential rabbi in America by Newsweek magazine in 2008 and the 30th most influential in 2009. Rabbi Stern graduated with high honors from Dartmouth College, earned his M. A. in Jewish education from the Rhea Hirsch School of Education at HUC-JIR Los Angeles, California in 1988, and was ordained from HUC in 1989.

Rabbi Stern is known for his efforts on social justice. He is the vice-chair of the Union for Reform Judaism's Joint Commission on Social Action and Chair of the Commission's Task Force on Economic Justice. He has been a fierce advocate in leading Temple Emanu-El and the Jewish community on issues such as Darfur including the creation of the Dolls for Darfur program and visiting Sudanese Refugees in Chad. He is also the past chair of both the Dallas Faith Communities Coalition, the Children's Advisory Board of the Dallas Children's Advocacy Center, and the Rabbinic Association of Greater Dallas. Rabbi Stern serves on the boards of both CHAI (Community Homes for Adults, Inc.) and the Dallas Jewish Coalition for the Homeless. He is also associated with the National Interreligious Leadership Initiative for Peace in the Middle East, and was a signatory on the group's February 28, 2006 National Interreligious Leadership Delegation for Peace in the Middle East Appeal to the President [George W. Bush] to Make Israeli-Palestinian Peace a Priority of U.S. Policy.

David Stern (Israeli politician)

David Stern (Hebrew: דוד שטרן‎, 29 March 1910 – 13 February 2003) was an Israeli businessman and politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Likud between 1979 and 1981.

Biography

Stern was born in Suwałki in the Russian Empire (today in Poland) in 1910. During World War I his mother fled the Germans with him and his brother, Avraham, and found refuge with her sister in Russia. Stern studied engineering in Brno in Czechoslovakia. He made aliyah to Mandatory Palestine in 1935, and became a member of Lehi, of which Avraham was the leader.

He worked as a building contractor, and was president of the Building Contractors Association.

A member of the Herut central committee, he became a member of Tel Aviv city council in 1969. He was on the Likud list (an alliance of Herut and other right-wing parties) for the 1977 elections, but failed to win a seat. However, he entered the Knesset on 18 June 1979 as a replacement for Shmuel Rechtman, who had resigned his seat after failing in an appeal against a conviction for bribery. Stern lost his seat in the 1981 elections.

David of Bulgaria

David (Bulgarian: Давид) (died 976) was a Bulgarian noble, brother of Emperor Samuel and eldest son of komes Nicholas. After the disastrous invasion of Rus' armies and the fall of North-eastern Bulgaria under Byzantine occupation in 971, he and his three younger brothers took the lead of the defence of the country. They executed their power together and each of them governed and defended a separate region. He ruled the southern-most parts of the realm from Prespa and Kastoria and was responsible for the defence the dangerous borders with Thessalonica and Thessaly. In 976 he participated in the major assault against the Byzantine Empire but was killed by vagrant Vlachs between Prespa and Kostur.

However, there's also another version about David’s origin. David gains the title "comes" during his service in the Byzantine army which recruited many Armenians from the Eastern region of the empire. The 11th-century historian Stepanos Asoghik wrote that Samuel had one brother, and they were Armenians from the district Derjan. This version is supported by the historians Nicholas Adontz, Jordan Ivanov, and Samuil's Inscription where it’s said that Samuel’s brother is David. Also, the historians Yahya and Al Makin clearly distinguish the race of Samuel and David (the Comitopouli) from the one of Moses and Aaron (the royal race):
