David Prowse

David Prowse, MBE (born 1 July 1935) is an English bodybuilder,weightlifter and actor. He played Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy, though the character's voice was provided by James Earl Jones. He also played the Green Cross Code man, a character used in British road safety advertising.

Career

Darth Vader

Prowse played the physical form of Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy.James Earl Jones, however, provided the voice for the character. Prowse spoke the dialogue during filming and although he was never going to be used as the voice of Darth Vader, Prowse claims he was originally told that he would be seen and heard at the end of Return of the Jedi when Vader's mask was removed. Instead, actor Sebastian Shaw was used. Lucas claims he wanted a "darker voice"—that is, a deeper, more reverberating voice—and never intended to use Prowse, who has a West Country accent. In the 2004 documentary Empire of Dreams, actress Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia in the original trilogy films, quipped that they nicknamed Prowse "Darth Farmer" because of his un-intimidating accent. In the lightsaber fight scenes between Vader and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Prowse, who wasn't a very skilled swordsman (he kept breaking the poles that stood in for the lightsabers), was replaced by the scene's fight-choreographer, the stuntman and fencing coach Bob Anderson.

David Prowse (politician)

David John Prowse (born 10 March 1941), a former Australian politician, was the first Speaker of the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly, serving between 1989 and 1992. Elected at the 1989 general election to the inaugural multi-member single electorate unicameral Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly representing, initially, the No Self-Government Party, Prowse then sat as an independent, before joining the Liberal Party of Australia.

Biography

Born in Cairns, Queensland, Prowse was educated at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology where he graduated with an Associate Diploma in Electrical Engineering and worked as an electrical fitter and mechanic, and later as an electrical engineer with the Royal Australian Air Force. Prowse rose through the Air Force ranks to become an Engineer Officer (Instrumentation) before retiring with the rank of Squadron Leader after twenty years service. Prowse retrained as a naturopath and rose to political prominence as an anti-water fluoridation activist.

David (commentator)

David (Greek: Δαυΐδ; fl. 6th century) was a Greek scholar and a commentator on Aristotle and Porphyry.

He may have come from Thessaly, but in later times he was confused with an Armenian of the same name (David Anhaght). He was a pupil of Olympiodorus in Alexandria in the late 6th century. His name suggests that he was a Christian.

Three commentaries to Aristotle's works attributed to him have survived: as well as an introduction to philosophy (prolegomena):

Another anonymous commentary on Porphyry's Isagoge which was falsely ascribed to Elias (pseudo-Elias), was also falsely ascribed to David.

David of Bulgaria

David (Bulgarian: Давид) (died 976) was a Bulgarian noble, brother of Emperor Samuel and eldest son of komes Nicholas. After the disastrous invasion of Rus' armies and the fall of North-eastern Bulgaria under Byzantine occupation in 971, he and his three younger brothers took the lead of the defence of the country. They executed their power together and each of them governed and defended a separate region. He ruled the southern-most parts of the realm from Prespa and Kastoria and was responsible for the defence the dangerous borders with Thessalonica and Thessaly. In 976 he participated in the major assault against the Byzantine Empire but was killed by vagrant Vlachs between Prespa and Kostur.

However, there's also another version about David’s origin. David gains the title "comes" during his service in the Byzantine army which recruited many Armenians from the Eastern region of the empire. The 11th-century historian Stepanos Asoghik wrote that Samuel had one brother, and they were Armenians from the district Derjan. This version is supported by the historians Nicholas Adontz, Jordan Ivanov, and Samuil's Inscription where it’s said that Samuel’s brother is David. Also, the historians Yahya and Al Makin clearly distinguish the race of Samuel and David (the Comitopouli) from the one of Moses and Aaron (the royal race):

David, Chiriquí

David (Spanish pronunciation: [daˈβið]) officially San José de David is a city and corregimiento located in the west of Panama. It is the capital of the province of Chiriquí and has an estimated population of 144,858 inhabitants as confirmed in 2013. It is a relatively affluent city with a firmly established, dominant middle class and a very low unemployment and poverty index. The Pan-American Highway is a popular route to David.
