David Morris (Conservative politician)

David Thomas Morris (born 3 January 1966, Leigh, Lancashire, England) is a British Conservative Party politician. He is Member of Parliament (MP) for Morecambe and Lunesdale in Lancashire, England.

Early life

The son of an ex-Royal Navy Lieutenant Commander turned civilian harbour master, Morris spent his youth in places as far afield as Hong Kong and the Bahamas, where the family's neighbours included actors Sean Connery and Elizabeth Taylor. He was educated at St Andrew's School in Nassau, Bahamas.

Career

After applying and failing to get into the Royal Navy because of his short sightedness, Morris apprenticed as a hairdresser, eventually working as a stylist for Pierre Alexandre Salon.

His hobby was playing the electric guitar, and he joined a teenage band in which Richard "Rick" Astley was the drummer. After leaving school at 16 and whilst training as a hairdresser, Morris and Astley played the Northern club circuit at night in bands including 'Give Way' – specialising in covering Beatles and Shadows songs – and 'FBI', a soul music band which won several local talent competitions. After the lead singer left FBI, Morris also left the band to concentrate on hairdressing. Astley had stepped up to take over vocals, and after being spotted by Pete Waterman was signed by Stock, Aitken and Waterman. Signed under a separate SAW contract, Morris rejoined Astley's backing band, and although being the guitar player, appeared on the BBC's Top of the Pops faking playing a keyboard for the song "She Wants to Dance with Me". Morris also wrote songs, both for Astley and other SAW performers including Sonia, Brother Beyond and Jason Donovan.

David Morris (snooker player)

David Morris, born in Kilkenny, Ireland, on 27 November 1988, is an Irish snooker player, currently ranked as Ireland's number 3 player, after Fergal O'Brien and Ken Doherty.

Career

Early career

Aged 16, he reached the quarter finals of the U21 World Snooker Championships. He has been Irish champion at every level, winning the overall National championship every year from 2004 to 2006 (becoming the youngest ever winner in 2004). For 2006/2007 he made his debut on the main tour, reaching the last 64 in two tournaments.

His best run in the 2007–2008 season was to the last 48 of the UK Championships, where he lost to Dave Harold (who also defeated him in qualifying for the previous year's Welsh Open). His only opening-round defeat that year was to Supoj Saenla in the World Championship, but despite this setback in the highest ranking-point event of the season he did enough to reach the top 64 of the rankings. He also won the Lucan Racing Irish Classic, an event staged by Fergal O'Brien featuring 8 (mostly Irish) professionals – Morris beat O'Brien 5–3 in the final.

David Morris (United States Army officer)

David A. Morris is an American Major General who serves as Director of the Joint Irregular Warfare Center, and Director, Joint Reserve Directorate, US Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM).

Military career and background

Morris graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1975 and served on active duty as an Infantry and Special Forces officer until 1984.

His active duty assignments were highlighted by a tour as a Special Forces detachment commander and advisor during the Salvadoran Civil War in 1980 and 1981 while a member of the 7th Special Forces Group. He also served as a Special Forces instructor at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in addition to operational assignments with Special Forces units.

As a United States Army Reserve soldier, Morris served with the Joint Special Operations Agency, the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), Special Operations Command Europe (SOCEUR), and with the Special Operations Command Joint Forces Command (SOCJFCOM), where he commanded the Joint Reserve Unit. As a Brigadier General, he served as the Deputy Commanding General of the US Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command (Airborne) (USACAPOC (A)) and later as Commanding General from 2007-2009. From 2009-2010, he served as Deputy Director of the Joint Capabilities Directorate (J8), USJFCOM, and later as the Director of the Joint Irregular Warfare Center. He retired in January 2012.

David of Bulgaria

David (Bulgarian: Давид) (died 976) was a Bulgarian noble, brother of Emperor Samuel and eldest son of komes Nicholas. After the disastrous invasion of Rus' armies and the fall of North-eastern Bulgaria under Byzantine occupation in 971, he and his three younger brothers took the lead of the defence of the country. They executed their power together and each of them governed and defended a separate region. He ruled the southern-most parts of the realm from Prespa and Kastoria and was responsible for the defence the dangerous borders with Thessalonica and Thessaly. In 976 he participated in the major assault against the Byzantine Empire but was killed by vagrant Vlachs between Prespa and Kostur.

However, there's also another version about David’s origin. David gains the title "comes" during his service in the Byzantine army which recruited many Armenians from the Eastern region of the empire. The 11th-century historian Stepanos Asoghik wrote that Samuel had one brother, and they were Armenians from the district Derjan. This version is supported by the historians Nicholas Adontz, Jordan Ivanov, and Samuil's Inscription where it’s said that Samuel’s brother is David. Also, the historians Yahya and Al Makin clearly distinguish the race of Samuel and David (the Comitopouli) from the one of Moses and Aaron (the royal race):

David, Chiriquí

David (Spanish pronunciation: [daˈβið]) officially San José de David is a city and corregimiento located in the west of Panama. It is the capital of the province of Chiriquí and has an estimated population of 144,858 inhabitants as confirmed in 2013. It is a relatively affluent city with a firmly established, dominant middle class and a very low unemployment and poverty index. The Pan-American Highway is a popular route to David.

The development of the banking sector, public construction works such as the expansion of the airport and the David-Boquete highway alongside the growth of commercial activity in the city have increased its prominence as one of the fastest growing regions in the country. The city is currently the economic center of the Chiriqui province and produces more than half the gross domestic product of the province, which totals 2.1 billion. It is known for being the third-largest city in the country both in population and by GDP and for being the largest city in Western Panama.

David (Bernini)

David is a life-size marble sculpture by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The sculpture was one of many commissions to decorate the villa of Bernini's patron Cardinal Scipione Borghese – where it still resides today, as part of the Galleria Borghese It was completed in the course of seven months from 1623 to 1624.

The subject of the work is the biblical David, about to throw the stone that will bring down Goliath, which will allow David to behead him. Compared to earlier works on the same theme (notably the David of Michelangelo), the sculpture broke new ground in its implied movement and its psychological intensity.

Background

Between 1618 and 1625 Bernini was commissioned to undertake various sculptural work for the villa of one of his patrons, Cardinal Scipione Borghese. In 1623 – only yet 24 years old – he was working on the sculpture of Apollo and Daphne, when, for unknown reasons, he abandoned this project to start work on the David. According to records of payment, Bernini had started on the sculpture by mid–1623, and his contemporary biographer, Filippo Baldinucci, states that he finished it in seven months.
