David Evans (rugby)

David "Dave" Alexander Evans (4 October 1886 – 12 October 1940) was a New Zealand dual-code international who represented his country in both rugby union and rugby league.

Playing career

Rugby union

Evans began his career playing rugby union and represented Hawke's Bay 19 times from 1906. He made the 1910 New Zealand tour of Australia and played in the 0–11 Test defeat by Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on 27 June 1910, becoming the Hawke's Bay's third representative.

Rugby league

While in Australia Evans had been impressed by the rugby league code and in 1911 he was instrumental in helping persuade three Hawke's Bay clubs—Clive, Ahuriri and Kia Toa—to switch en masse to rugby league. A Hawke's Bay representative, he represented New Zealand on the 1912 tour of Australia, where no test matches were played.

David John Evans (23 April 1935 – 22 October 2008) was an English business executive and Conservative politician.

Biography

Born in Edmonton in London, Evans came from a working-class background and attended Tottenham Technical College. As a youngster he showed promise as a footballer and cricketer and played for Aston Villa, although without making any first-team appearances, between 1950 and 1954. An opening batsman, he also played for Gloucestershire CCC and Warwickshire CCC at cricket, although, again, without making any first-team appearances.

In 1956 Evans married Janice Masters in Edmonton. In 1960 Evans borrowed £500 to found his own industrial cleaning company, called Exclusive Office Cleaning, which later became Brengreen Holdings. He sold this for £32 million in 1986. Four years later, in 1990, he formed Broadreach, another industrial cleaning company, of which he was chairman for 12 years.

From November 1984 to 15 June 1989, Evans was the chairman of Luton Town Football Club. The club played in the Football League First Division during Evans' tenure as chairman, and he presided over a controversial membership-only scheme for fans under which only members were allowed to attend matches at the club's home ground and away supporters were banned from the stadium. Evans served on the club's board of directors from 1976 to 22 May 1990 when he resigned.

David Evans (Somerset cricketer, born 1928)

George Herbert David Evans (22 August 1928 – 20 June 1991) was a cricketer who played eight first-class matches for Somerset in 1953.

Evans was born at Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol. A club cricketer in Weston-super-Mare, he played first for Somerset's first team as a right-handed middle-order batsman in June 1953 in a three-day non-first-class match against a Royal Air Force team that included Fred Trueman, top-scoring with 34 in the county's first innings and making 56 in the second innings, when Harold Gimblett got a century. He then made his first-class debut in a crushing two-day defeat by Glamorgan in which he failed to reach double figures in either innings. He was one of several batsmen who filled various batting positions across the middle of the summer in a very poor side, which finished bottom of the County Championship for the second year in succession. Only in his final innings, 42 against Essex at Weston-super-Mare, did he make much impact: his stand of 86 for the sixth wicket with Johnny Lawrence was deemed "spirited" by Wisden Cricketers' Almanack, though Somerset were following on at the time and lost the match rather easily. His medium-pace bowling failed to take a wicket in eight overs in his first-class matches.

David of Bulgaria

David (Bulgarian: Давид) (died 976) was a Bulgarian noble, brother of Emperor Samuel and eldest son of komes Nicholas. After the disastrous invasion of Rus' armies and the fall of North-eastern Bulgaria under Byzantine occupation in 971, he and his three younger brothers took the lead of the defence of the country. They executed their power together and each of them governed and defended a separate region. He ruled the southern-most parts of the realm from Prespa and Kastoria and was responsible for the defence the dangerous borders with Thessalonica and Thessaly. In 976 he participated in the major assault against the Byzantine Empire but was killed by vagrant Vlachs between Prespa and Kostur.

However, there's also another version about David’s origin. David gains the title "comes" during his service in the Byzantine army which recruited many Armenians from the Eastern region of the empire. The 11th-century historian Stepanos Asoghik wrote that Samuel had one brother, and they were Armenians from the district Derjan. This version is supported by the historians Nicholas Adontz, Jordan Ivanov, and Samuil's Inscription where it’s said that Samuel’s brother is David. Also, the historians Yahya and Al Makin clearly distinguish the race of Samuel and David (the Comitopouli) from the one of Moses and Aaron (the royal race):

David, Chiriquí

David (Spanish pronunciation: [daˈβið]) officially San José de David is a city and corregimiento located in the west of Panama. It is the capital of the province of Chiriquí and has an estimated population of 144,858 inhabitants as confirmed in 2013. It is a relatively affluent city with a firmly established, dominant middle class and a very low unemployment and poverty index. The Pan-American Highway is a popular route to David.

David Abraham Cheulkar

David Abraham Cheulkar (1909 – 28 December 1981), popularly known as David, was a Jewish-Indian Hindi film actor and a member of Mumbai's Marathi speaking Bene Israel community. In a career spanning four decades, he played mostly character roles, starting with 1941 film Naya Sansar, and went on to act in over 110 films, including memorable films like, Gol Maal (1979), Baton Baton Mein (1979) and Boot Polish (1954) for which he was awarded the 1955 Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award.

Early life

David graduated from the University of Bombay with a Bachelor of Arts degree in the year 1930. After a six year unsuccessful struggle to land himself a job, he decided to try his luck in the Hindi film industry by becoming a professional actor. During these years of struggle, he also managed to obtain a degree in law from the Government Law College.

Finally, on 15 January 1937, with the help of his close friend Mr. Nayampalli, a veteran character actor, he managed to land himself his first role in a movie. The movie was Zambo and it was being produced and directed by Mohan Bhavnani who was the Chief Producer of the Films Division of the Government of India.
