Dave Lowry

David John Lowry (born February 14, 1965) is a retired professional ice hockey player. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1985 to 2004. He was most recently an assistant coach of the Calgary Flames and the former head coach of the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League. On Thursday, July 19, 2012, he was named the new Head Coach of the Victoria Royals of the WHL.

Lowry's sons, Adam and Joel, were drafted by the Winnipeg Jets and the Los Angeles Kings, respectively. Adam currently plays for the Winnipeg Jets in the National Hockey League (NHL). Joel currently plays for the Cornell Big Red in ECAC Hockey.

Playing career

Born in Sudbury, Ontario and raised in Ottawa, Ontario, Dave Lowry was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the 6th round, 110th overall, in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. He played three seasons with the London Knights of the OHL before joining the Canucks for the start of the 1985–86 NHL season. In Vancouver, he played for three seasons with only spending part of the 1987–88 season in the minors for the Fredericton Express of the American Hockey League (AHL). On 29 September 1988, just prior to the start of the 1988–89 NHL season, Lowry was traded to the St. Louis Blues for Ernie Vargas.

Dave Lowry (martial arts)

Dave Lowry is an American writer best known for his articles, manuals and novels based on Japanese martial arts.

A student of Japanese martial arts since 1968, when he began studying Yagyū Shinkage-ryū kenjutsu under Ryokichi Kotaro of the Nara Prefecture of Japan, he has also studied Shintō Musō-ryū, as well as karate, aikido, and Kodokan judo.

He has a degree in English, and has written about a variety of topics related to budō, the Japanese concept of the "martial way." He has written training manuals on use of weapons such as the bokken and jo, a few novels centered on the lifestyle of the budōka (one who follows the martial way), and countless articles on martial practices and traditional Japanese philosophy. He has been a regular columnist for Black Belt magazine since 1986, where he writes on the traditional arts.

He has written almost 20 books, primarily on the martial arts.

He has also held positions as a published restaurant critic.
