Scooter Smith

Daniel “Scooter” Smith (born November 11, 1980) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player.

Smith attended Colgate University where he captained the Colgate Raiders in the NCAA's ECAC Hockey conference. In his senior year Smith scored 24 goals and 17 assists for 41 points to lead the ECAC in goals, and was named to the 2002–03 All-ECAC Second Team.

Immediately following is graduation, Smith made his professional debut playing in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Syracuse Crunch near the end of the 2002–03 AHL season.

Smith retired following the 2010–11 season spent with the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL.

Daniel Smith (surveyor)

Daniel Smith (October 29, 1748 – June 16, 1818) was a surveyor, an American Revolutionary War patriot, and twice a United States Senator from Tennessee.

Biography

Smith was born in Stafford County, Virginia. He was a descendant of Colonel William Tangier Smith (1654–1704), who was born in Northamptonshire, England and settled in the Province of New York. Daniel Smith attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Becoming a surveyor, he moved to Augusta County, Virginia, serving as deputy surveyor of the county in 1773. As a militia officer, he helped defend the Virginia frontier during Dunmore's War and the American Revolution. He became sheriff of Augusta County in 1780 and was commissioned a colonel in the militia, taking part in the later battles of the Revolutionary War, including Guilford Courthouse and Kings Mountain. On October 5, 1781, Smith was appointed "Assistant Deputy Surveyor" in the Southern Department of the Continental Army under Thomas Hutchins.

Daniel Smith was a football goalkeeper who played one game for Port Vale in March 1923.

Playing career

Smith joined Port Vale in August 1922. His only appearance came in a 3–1 defeat to Southampton at The Dell on 5 March 1923. He was released at the end of the 1922–23 season after failing to dislodge Teddy Peers.

"Daniel" is a major hit song and ballad by Elton John. It appeared on the 1973 album Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player. It was written by John and his lyricist Bernie Taupin. In the United Kingdom, the song reached no. 4 in the official chart. In the USA the song reached No. 2 on the pop charts and No. 1 on the adult contemporary charts for two weeks in the spring of 1973. In the United States, it was certified Gold on 13 September 1995 by the RIAA. In Canada, it became his second No. 1 single, following "Crocodile Rock" earlier in the year, holding the position for two weeks in the RPM 100 national singles chart. Writers John and Taupin received the 1973 Ivor Novello award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically.

Composition

Bernie Taupin wrote "Daniel" after reading an article in either Time or Newsweek about a Vietnam War veteran who had been wounded, and wanted to get away from the attention he was receiving when he went back home. A verse in the original draft was cut from the final version, which has led to some speculation on the contents.
