Daniel Rogers

Daniel Rogers (January 3, 1754 – February 2, 1806) was an American miller and politician from Milford, in Sussex County, Delaware. He was a member of the Federalist Party, who served in the Delaware General Assembly and as Governor of Delaware.

Early life and family

Rogers was born on a farm in Accomack County, Virginia, near Pungoteagu, son of James and Patience Rogers. The family came from England to the Virginia Eastern Shore in 1665. His first wife was Esther O. Crapper, the wealthy wife and heiress of Mouton Crapper of Milford, Delaware. They had five children, James, Thomas, Betsey, Moulton and Daniel, and lived at the Causey Mansion in Milford, which named for a subsequent Governor of Delaware who lived there later. After her death, Rogers married Nancy Russum, with whom he had seven more children, John, Samuel, Clement, Hannah, William, Mary and Henry. They were members of Christ Episcopal Church in Milford.

Professional and political career

Rogers came to Cedar Creek Hundred, in Sussex County, Delaware about 1775, and acquired a farm there. Following his first marriage in 1778 and his inheritance of the Crapper property, he bought various milling operations in the area, including the Haven Mills which were north of Milford in Kent County. He also bought a brick granary at Argo's Corner and a tavern at Cedar Creek Village.

Daniel Rogers (Puritan)

Daniel Rogers (1573–1652) was an English nonconforming clergyman and religious writer. He is now best known for his conduct book Matrimoniall Honour.

Life

He was the eldest son of Richard Rogers of Wethersfield, Essex, by his first wife, and was born there. Ezekiel Rogers was his younger brother. He proceeded to Christ's College, Cambridge, where he was taught by William Perkins. He graduated B.A. in 1595-6, and M.A. in 1599, and was fellow from 1600 to 1608.

On leaving the university Rogers officiated as minister at Haversham, Buckinghamshire, but when Stephen Marshall, his father's successor at Wethersfield, moved to Finchingfield, Rogers returned to Wethersfield as lecturer, with Daniel Weld or Weald, another puritan, as vicar. He had several personal discussions with William Laud, who paid tribute to his scholarship, but, after being harassed for various acts of nonconformity, he was suspended by the archbishop in 1629. Conforming clergy in North Essex presented a memorial to the bishop on his behalf, but he apparently left Essex for a time.

Daniel Rogers (diplomat)

Daniel Rogers (1538?–1591) was an Anglo-Flemish diplomat and politician, known as a well-connected humanist poet and historian.

Early life

The eldest son of John Rogers and his wife Adriana van der Weyden of Antwerp, he was born at Wittenberg about 1538. John Rogers the civilian was a brother, and went on some diplomatic missions with him. On his mother's side Rogers was related to Emanuel van Meteren and Abraham Ortelius.

Rogers came to England with his family in 1548, and was naturalised with them in 1552. After his father's death in 1555 he returned to Wittenberg, and studied under Philip Melanchthon. He was taught also by Hubert Languet and Johannes Sturm. He returned to England on Elizabeth I's accession, and graduated B.A. at Oxford in August 1561. Nicasius Yetswiert, Elizabeth's secretary of the French tongue, who had known his father, and whose daughter Susan Rogers afterwards married, introduced him to court.

Rogers was then in Paris for nine years, with a break in Antwerp in 1565, and came under the influences of Petrus Ramus, and the contemporary eirenicism. He may have worked in some capacity in Paris for Sir Thomas Hoby; he was employed as a tutor by Sir Henry Norris, the next English ambassador in Paris, between 1566 and 1570, and sent home intelligence to Secretary William Cecil. After that Francis Walsingham took over as ambassador there.

Daniel (Bat for Lashes song)

"Daniel" is a song by English recording artist Bat for Lashes, from her second studio album, Two Suns. It is her best selling single to date, selling over 46,000 copies worldwide. The song was announced as the lead single from Two Suns in January 2009, then released as a digital download single on 1 March 2009, and as a 7" vinyl single on 6 April 2009. The track was written by Natasha Khan and produced by David Kosten, as with all tracks on the album. Ira Wolf Tuton from Yeasayer provided the bass lines for the song and Khan did the rest of the instrumentation herself. Khan said in an interview with The Sun newspaper that "Daniel" is based on a fictional character that she fell in love with as a teenager. The single's cover features Khan with an image of the character Daniel LaRusso, from the film The Karate Kid, painted on her back. A character much like LaRusso also features at the end of the music video which goes with the song. The B-side of the 7" is a cover version of a 1980 single by The Cure.

Daniel (department store)

Daniel is an English department store chain and Royal Warrant holder, with its flagship store situated in central Windsor. It was established in 1901 by Walter James Daniel, and is privately owned.
