Daniel Haines

Daniel Haines (January 6, 1801 – January 26, 1877) was an American jurist who served as the 14th Governor of New Jersey.

Haines was born in New York City, the nephew of Governor Aaron Ogden. He graduated from The College of New Jersey (now Princeton) in 1820, and went on to practice law in Newton and Hamburg. He started his career in politics as a local supporter of Andrew Jackson in the 1824 presidential election.

He won election to the New Jersey Legislative Council representing Sussex County in 1839 and 1840, and was elected to be governor in 1843. During his first term, he brought about the calling of a convention to form a new New Jersey State Constitution. He was reelected in 1847, and his administration concentrated on improving state schooling and government.

After his service as governor, Haines was appointed in 1852 as an Associate Justice to the New Jersey Supreme Court, an office which he held into 1866. He spent the remainder of his years working towards prison reform, an issue which was close to his heart.

Daniel Haines (footballer)

Daniel Haines (born 11 April 1981) is a former Australian rules football midfielder who played for the Fremantle Dockers in the Australian Football League and the Peel Thunder in the West Australian Football League.

Haines played junior club football at South Mandurah, and played Colts football with the Peel Thunder shortly after it joined the WAFL in 1997, and broke into its senior team in 1999. He was drafted to the AFL by the Fremantle Dockers to its rookie list in 2001, and was elevated to the senior list at the beginning of the 2002 season. He made his senior AFL debut in Round 6 2002, against Essendon, in the game best remembered for Essendon captain James Hird sustaining very serious facial injuries.

He was delisted at the end of the 2004 season, but redrafted by Fremantle with selection 69 in the National Draft. After playing a total of 16 in 2002 and 2003, numerous injuries to his knee, big toe and Achilles tendon have kept him out of the senior side and he was finally delisted at the end of 2006.

In the United States, the U.S. Social Security Administration reports that Daniel has peaked as the fifth most popular name for newborns in 1985, 1990, 2007, and 2008. The U.S. Census Bureau reported that in the 2000 census, "Daniels" was the 182nd most common surname in the U.S., while "McDaniel" was ranked at 323, and "Daniel" (without a final "s") was ranked at 380.

Daniel (Bat for Lashes song)

"Daniel" is a song by English recording artist Bat for Lashes, from her second studio album, Two Suns. It is her best selling single to date, selling over 46,000 copies worldwide. The song was announced as the lead single from Two Suns in January 2009, then released as a digital download single on 1 March 2009, and as a 7" vinyl single on 6 April 2009. The track was written by Natasha Khan and produced by David Kosten, as with all tracks on the album. Ira Wolf Tuton from Yeasayer provided the bass lines for the song and Khan did the rest of the instrumentation herself. Khan said in an interview with The Sun newspaper that "Daniel" is based on a fictional character that she fell in love with as a teenager. The single's cover features Khan with an image of the character Daniel LaRusso, from the film The Karate Kid, painted on her back. A character much like LaRusso also features at the end of the music video which goes with the song. The B-side of the 7" is a cover version of a 1980 single by The Cure.

Daniel (department store)

Daniel is an English department store chain and Royal Warrant holder, with its flagship store situated in central Windsor. It was established in 1901 by Walter James Daniel, and is privately owned.
