Dancing ban

Dancing bans, legal or religious prohibitions against dancing, have been applied at various times in various jurisdictions around the world. Even more controversial than recreational or artistic dancing have been sexually suggestive forms such as lap dancing, topless dancing, and rave dancing.

Religious bans

In Islam, Salafists and Wahhabis consider dancing in general to be haram (forbidden). Conservative Islamic and Orthodox Jewish traditions prohibit contact between men and women in public (especially those not married to each other), and thus in these societies men and women either dance separately or not at all.

In contrast, Sufi Islam encourages dancing, for example Sufi whirling and dancing to celebrate Mela Chiraghan. This has resulted in conflict in areas influenced by the Taliban.

Various groups in Christianity believe that dancing is either inherently sinful or that certain forms of dancing could lead to sinful thoughts or activities, and thus proscribe it either in general or during religious services. These include some adherents of Mennonite, Hutterite, Baptist, Seventh-day Adventist, and Holiness movement sects. Jehovah's Witnesses disfavor events where there might be sexually suggestive dancing or excessive drinking of alcohol. Likewise, the Church of the Nazarene recommends against "All forms of dancing that detract from spiritual growth and break down proper moral inhibitions and reserve." Many Christian churches determine doctrine locally and may be non-denominational, and these vary on their stances on social dancing.

Baní

Baní is a capital town of the Peravia Province, Dominican Republic. It is the commercial and manufacturing center in a region producing bananas and coffee.

Overview

The city of Bani is the capital of the Peravia province; its residents also know it as the home of poets. It’s only an hour’s drive west of Santo Domingo. The province’s population is relatively small with 169,865 people, and only 61,864 in the Bani metro area. This is a tightly knit community with families and neighborhoods dating back several centuries.

Bani is a Taino word meaning “abundant water.” The area was named after an important Taino leader of the Maguana people. He was said to be one of Caonabo’s closest allies. But, it wasn’t until 1764 when a group of neighbors concerned with their security and safety came together to purchase a property large enough to build their own village in the valley of Bani. Historians set the sum of this purchase as that of “300 pesos fuertes” for a property called Cerro Gordo; the principals were listed as Francisco Baez and Bartolome del Castillo.

Ban (Korean name)

Ban, also spelled Bahn or Pan, is a Korean family name and an element in Korean given names. Its meaning depends on the hanja used to write it.

Family name

Overview

The family name Ban is written with either of two hanja, indicating different lineages. The 2000 South Korean census found a total of 26,171 people and 8,143 households with these family names. In a study by the National Institute of the Korean Language based on 2007 application data for South Korean passports, it was found that 93.8% of people with this family name spelled it in Latin letters as Ban in their passports, while 4% spelled it Van. Rarer alternative spellings (the remaining 2.2%) included Bahn.

Less common (班)

班 (나눌 반 nanul ban) is the less common of the two names. This character was originally used to write the Chinese family name pronounced Bān in Mandarin. None of the surviving records clarify when the family name was adopted in Korea or whether the various clans using this character as their surname have a common ancestor. The 2000 South Korean census found 2,955 people with this family name, and 919 households. Ban (law)

A ban is a formal or informal prohibition of something. Bans are formed for the prohibition of activities within a certain political territory. Some see this as a negative act (equating it to a form of censorship or discrimination) and others see it as maintaining the "status quo". Some bans in commerce are referred to as embargoes. Ban is also used as a verb similar in meaning to "to prohibit".

Etymology

In current English usage, ban is mostly synonymous with prohibition. Historically, Old English (ge)bann is a derivation from the verb bannan "to summon, command, proclaim" from an earlier Common Germanic *bannan "to command, forbid, banish, curse". The modern sense "to prohibit" is influenced by the cognate Old Norse banna "to curse, to prohibit" and also from Old French ban, ultimately a loan from Old Frankish, meaning "outlawry, banishment".

The Indo-European etymology of the Germanic term is from a root *bha- meaning "to speak". Its original meaning was magical, referring to utterances that carried a power to curse.

"Dancing" was the fourth single released in Italy and the United states from Elisa's third album, Then Comes the Sun, and the first single released from her American album Dancing.

Dancing (album)

Dancing is a compilation album by Italian singer Elisa that was released on July 15, 2008 in CD format in the United States and Canada. A digital version on iTunes was released on June 17, 2008 in the United States and on August 25, 2008 in Canada.

The album, released as part of an effort to introduce Elisa to North American audiences, is a compilation of recordings (some remixed) from previously released albums dating back to 2000.

Released of the full album was preceded by the released of an EP featuring the song "Dancing" which was released in December 2007. Beside the title track, the EP includes "Rock Your Soul" (also included on the Dancing album), along with a live version of '"Dancing'" recorded at the iTunes Festival in London.

The first single from the album is Rainbow in a new remix edition by Glen Ballard.

Track origins

The songs on the album were chosen by Elisa and are culled from most of her albums, with the exception of her first, Pipes & Flowers.

There is only one song from her second album Asile's World (2000): "A Little Over Zero." However this is a remixed version of the original.
