Dance Gavin Dance is a post-hardcore band based in Sacramento, California and formed in 2005. The band currently consists of Tilian Pearson (vocals), Jon Mess (unclean vocals), Will Swan (lead guitar), Tim Feerick (bass guitar), and Matthew Mingus (drums, percussion). The band is known for their consistent line-up changes including former lead vocalists Jonny Craig and Kurt Travis.
Upon their development, Dance Gavin Dance released their debut EP, Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean in 2006 and signed to Rise Records thereafter. The band released their full-length debut studio album, Downtown Battle Mountain, in May 2007, which was proceeded by the singles "And I Told Them I Invented New Times Roman" and "Lemon Meringue Tie." The album's name was aptly titled after Battle Mountain, Nevada. Throughout 2008, the band's vocalist Jonny Craig and guitarist Sean O'Sullivan left the band and were replaced by vocalist Kurt Travis (A Lot Like Birds) and guitarist Zac Garren, later releasing their sophomore studio album, Dance Gavin Dance in August. The album peaked at No. 172 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and No. 26 on the Top Independent Albums chart. Vocalist Jon Mess and bass guitarist Eric Lodge left the band in 2008 and subsequently were replaced by bassist Jason Ellis. Happiness was released as the band's third studio album in June 2009, peaking at No. 145 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart and No. 30 on the Top Independent Albums chart and is the group's first release in which guitarist Will Swan pursued screaming vocals along with guitar parts for an album.
Dance Gavin Dance (album)
Dance Gavin Dance (also referred to as "Death Star" due to the album cover) is the second studio album by American post-hardcore band Dance Gavin Dance. Self-described as "self-titled", it was released by Rise Records on August 19, 2008. The album sold 3,800 copies in its first week, after the band had distributed several songs over the MySpace social network: "Alex English", "Me and Zoloft Get Along Fine", "The Robot with Human Hair, Pt. 3" and "Caviar".
Dance Gavin Dance is the first record and album to not include vocalist Jonny Craig and guitarist Sean O'Sullivan, but the first to feature guitarist Zac Garren and vocalist Kurt Travis; and hence, the last with vocalist Jon Mess and bassist Eric Lodge (prior to their return to the band in 2010), both of who left shortly after its recording, though before the album was released. The album was SmartPunk.com's "Smartpick of the Month", and the website offered a stream of the entire album from August 17 through 20. A music video has been released for the song "Me and Zoloft Get Along Just Fine." The album peaked at number 172 on the Billboard 200 and 26 on the Top Independent Albums chart.
