Dan (Chinese opera)

Dan (Chinese: 旦; Wade–Giles: tan), is the general name for female roles in Chinese opera, often referring to leading roles. There are a few different kinds of dan in Chinese opera. The commonly seen ones are 'Guimen Dan', 'Hua Dan', 'Daoma Dan', 'Wu Dan', 'Lao Dan' and 'Cai Dan'. Each different kind of dan has its own unique characteristics.

Guimen Dan

Guimen Dan (闺门旦) is the role of the virtuous lady. It is also known as Qingyi (青衣）or Zhengdan (正旦). Qingyi means 'green robes' in Chinese, although the term traditionally extends to the colour black. This kind of dan used to wear black robes. Qing Yi are normally mature and sometimes married women. They may be rich or poor, young or of middle age, but they have to be mature women to fall under this category. Qingyi focus more on singing and they have little movement. They sing in a very high pitched and piercing voice which many people who do not appreciate Chinese opera find difficult to like. Opera schools in China have difficulty recruiting students for this kind of role, since it requires a good voice, good looks and a good height. The most famous qingyi of the last century was Mei Lanfang. Examples of Guimen Dan are Du Liniang (杜丽娘) from The Peony Pavilion (牡丹亭) and Wang Baochuan (王宝钏）from Wujiapo （武家坡).

Scott (crater)

Scott is a lunar impact crater near the south pole of the Moon. Its location close to the lunar limb hinders observation, both from the foreshortening of the crater as seen from Earth and from the limited sunlight that enters the basin. In fact the northern end of this crater is in near perpetual darkness, and has not been mapped in detail. Scott lies between the similar-sized crater Amundsen to the southeast and Schomberger to the northwest. Just to the northeast is the crater Demonax.

The rim of this crater has been heavily eroded and the features are worn and irregular, although the crater basin remains roughly circular. There are several crater formations attached to the west and northwest outer rim, the most well-formed of which is the satellite crater Scott E. There is also small crater along the southeast inner wall, and several tiny craterlets across the inner floor. The interior surface is rougher at the southern end, and grows smoother and flatter toward the shadow-cloaked north end. There is no central peak at the crater midpoint.

876 Scott is a minor planet orbiting the Sun. For a long time, its name had been falsely attributed to Robert Falcon Scott. In fact, it was named after Palisa's financial supporter Miss E. Scott.

Scott Piering

Scott Piering (13 September 1946, Duluth, Minnesota – 24 January 2000) was a successful and influential American-born music publicist for many British music acts, including Pulp, The KLF, The Smiths, Stereophonics, The Orb, Placebo, Underworld and The Prodigy. He ran the publicity consultancy, Appearing Promotions.

Career

During his career, Piering was responsible for the promotion of many hit singles. Many bands with whom Piering closely worked attribute much of their early success in the UK Singles Chart to his efforts.

In the book The Manual (How To Have a Number One The Easy Way), written by The KLF's creators Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty in the wake of their chart-topping success as alter egos, The Timelords, the authors state that "without [Piering] this book would have to be retitled How To Get To Number 47 — With A Certain Amount of Difficulty.

Piering's work with The KLF also involved contributing a number of narrations and spoken lines to their commercial single releases, including "Justified and Ancient", "Last Train to Trancentral" ("Okay, everybody lie down on the floor and keep calm"), "3 a.m. Eternal" ("Ladies and gentlemen, The KLF have now left the building"), a long opening narration to "America: What Time Is Love?", and narration of the KLF movie, The Rites of Mu.
