Daljit Singh (politician)

Daljit Singh (Hindi: दलजीत सिंह) was an Indian politician who is a cousin of Talwinder Singh Marwah.

Singh stood as the Indian National Congress candidate in the Safdar Jang constituency. He won the seat, having obtained 5,870 votes (81.21% of the votes in the constituency).

Singh lived on Queensway in New Delhi. He was the youngest brother of Khushwant Singh.

Daljit Singh (cricketer)

Daljit Singh (born 1940–1941) is an Indian former first-class cricketer and pitch curator. He played for various teams during his career from 1961/62 to 1978/79. After his playing career, he became a pitch curator and chairman of the grounds and pitches committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

Life and career

Singh was a wicket-keeper batsman who appeared in 87 first-class and 3 List A matches. The teams he represented include Services, Northern Punjab, Delhi, Bihar, North Zone and East Zone. He was a prolific wicket-keeper and batsman, effecting more than 200 dismissals and scoring close to 4000 runs. He was working for the Indian Navy when he started his cricket career with Services. He played for Bihar for 12 seasons and also captained them to 1975–76 Ranji Trophy final.

Singh was employed with Tata Steel in Jamshedpur during his career with Bihar. He worked for one year at 10 Janpath, where he prepared a cricket pitch inside the residence of the Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri for Shastri's son who was interested in cricket. He worked for 22 years with Tata Steel as chief of community and rural development services, before being employed for three years in Bangalore by an NGO. During his stay in Bangalore he coached the likes of Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad. He was then offered a coaching role with the Punjab team as well as a role with the under-construction stadium in Mohali by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) secretary I. S. Bindra.

Daljit Singh (ophthalmologist)

Daljit Singh is an Indian ophthalmologist and the former honorary surgeon to V. V. Giri, the erstwhile President of India. Born on 11 October 1934 to Sahib Singh, who was a Sikh academic in the area of Sikh literature. He did his early schooling at Khalsa School and than pre-medical at Khalsa College in the city and graduated in Medicine with MBBS from the Government Medical College, Amritsar in 1956. After receiving his Bachelor’s of medicine and surgery, he performed a "house job" in ophthalmology. For more than 2 years Dr. Singh worked as a general practitioner in the rural hinterland and later received his ophthalmic diploma (DOMS). He than went on to master's degree studies & secured a master's degree (MS) in ophthalmology in 1963. In May 1964, Dr. Singh returned to Amritsar as a senior lecturer in ophthalmology and then transferred to Medical College, Patiala, for 5 years.

Singh served as a member of faculty of the Government Medical colleges in Amritsar and Patiala for 23 years and became an Emeritus professor of the institutions. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian award of Padma Shri in 1987. Seven years later, he received Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian medical award from the Medical Council of India in 1994.
