Dafen Village

Dafen (Chinese: 大芬; pinyin: Dàfēn) is a suburb of Buji, Longgang, Shenzhen in Guangdong province, China. In the early 1990s a group of about twenty artists under the leadership of the painter and businessman Huang Jiang took up residence in this town. They specialised in the making of large numbers of replicas of oil paintings by masters such as Van Gogh, Dalí, da Vinci, Rembrandt or Warhol

These replicas were sold in many countries for relatively low prices. The endeavor was quite successful and the demand for replicas increased. In order to fulfill the demand more and more artists took up residence and started to make a living, the estimate (2006) being in the thousands.

Many of the artists are trained at art academies in the required techniques and produce dozens of replicas daily.

The official policy states that these replicas are of paintings of artists who have died more than seventy years ago and consequently out of copyright. An obvious exception to this would be Andy Warhol (cited above) who died in 1987, and Dalí, who died in 1989.

Dafen (electoral ward)

Dafen is an electoral ward, representing part of the community of Llanelli Rural, Carmarthenshire, Wales.

Profile

In 2014, the Dafen electoral ward had an electorate of 2,665. The total population was 3,615, of whom 84.6% were born in Wales. 26.9% of the population were able to speak Welsh.

Current Representation

The Dafen Ward is a single-member ward for the purposes of Carmarthenshire County Council elections. Since 2012 it has been represented by Labour Party councilor Tegwen Devichand.

Recent History

The first election to the new unitary Carmarthenshire County Council took place in 1995. Dafen Ward was wonby the Labour Party candidate, Vernon Warlow, who defeated a sitting member of Llanelli Borough Council.

At the 1999, Warlow was re-elected despite a strong showing by Plaid Cymru which won the Llanelli seat in the inaugural Welsh Assembly elections held on the same day.

Labour again held the seat in 2004. Tegwen Devichand was elected at a by-election following the death of the previous councillor, Vernon Warlow.
