Career [link]

Hewlett studied engineering at college, but soon shifted his focus to the turntables. He adopted his DJ moniker from the phrase "there's the money shot", which people would yell whenever he threw the ball into the net while playing basketball.[2][3] Among his inspirations Cash Money lists Grandmaster Flash and Grand Wizzard Theodore, whom he saw in the early 1980s, while artists who count him among their own inspirations include British DJ Fatboy Slim.[3][4]

He and Jazzy Jeff both emerged from the Philadelphia hip hop scene in the late 1980s.[5] They shared a friendly rivalry and DJ'd parties together as the Kings of Spin.[5] Cash Money perfected the Transformers scratch (along with Jazzy Jeff) which mimicked the robotic sound effects from the mid-80s television cartoon series of the same name.[1] He is also credited with creating the Pee Wee Herman scratch[2] and pioneering the Chirp scratch (aka the Babuggamas scratch).[6]

In 1988, he partnered with MC Marvelous (born Marvin Barrymen) and released the single, "Ugly People be Quiet" (co-produced by Herbie "Love Bug" Azor) and the album, Where's The Party At? on Sleeping Bag Records.[3][7] Cash Money has also produced and remixed tracks for artists such as Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Mantronix, Pm Dawn, Public Enemy.[2]

Accomplishments [link]

Cash Money won the New Music Seminar Supermen DJ Battle in 1987[8] and the DMC World DJ Championships in 1988.[3][2]

In 1998, turntable manufacturer Technics made Cash Money the first inductee into the DJ Hall of Fame.[1]

Cash money

Cash money could refer to one of the following:

  • DJ Cash Money, a Philadelphia-based hip hop DJ.
  • Money, the financial currency. The usage "cash money" sometimes disambiguates printed currency from other non-physical financial instruments.
  • Cash Money Records, a New Orleans-based record label.
  • Cash Money Millionaires, a term to describe rappers affiliated with Cash Money Records.
  • Cash Money Records

Cash Money Records, Inc. is an American record label founded by brothers Bryan "Birdman" Williams and Ronald "Slim" Williams, who are the CEOs. it is distributed by Republic Records, while used to be Universal Republic. The label includes artists such as Austin Mahone, Nicki Minaj and Caskey, and 2 Chainz.

    History

1991–1999: Beginnings and deal with Universal Records

Cash Money Records was founded in 1991. Bryan Williams told some of his close friends the motivation for starting the label:

For its first few years (1991–1994), Cash Money played host to a number of local releases by artists, selling only one album, without ever releasing a music video or having a Billboard hit. Some of the label's releases garnered some regional success in New Orleans, Louisiana, but the label was little known to the national rap scene. Artists on the label during this period included the group U.N.L.V. (Uptown Niggas Living Violently), Kilo G, Lil Slim, Pimp Daddy, and PxMxWx. In 1995, the label signed young rappers B.G., Young Buck and Lil Wayne. The signees marked what would be the second wave of Cash Money artists. In 1997, B.G. and Lil Wayne formed the group the Hot Boys together with Juvenile (who had already been regionally successful before Cash Money). Although they made little impact outside of the region in the beginning, they became the label's most well-known artists.
