Hitting for the cycle

In baseball, hitting for the cycle is the accomplishment of one batter hitting a single, a double, a triple, and a home run in the same game. Collecting the hits in that order is known as a "natural cycle". Cycles are rare in Major League Baseball (MLB), and have occurred only 306 times since the first by Curry Foley in 1882. The most recent example was accomplished by Matt Kemp of the San Diego Padres on August 14, 2015, against the Colorado Rockies, leaving the Miami Marlins as the only MLB franchise to have never had a player perform the feat.

Nine days earlier, just a few weeks after his Texas Rangers teammate Shin Soo Choo hit for the cycle on July 21, 2015, against the Colorado Rockies, Adrián Beltré hit for the cycle on August 3, 2015, against the Houston Astros. With the cycle hit on August 3, 2015, Beltre became only the fourth ever MLB player to hit for the cycle three times, and the only baseball player to hit for the cycle three times in the same ballpark (Globe Life Park in Arlington).

Cycle (film)

Cycle is a 2008 Indian Malayalam film directed by Johny Antony and written by James Albert, starring Vineeth Sreenivasan, Vinu Mohan, Sandhya, Bhama, and Jagathy Sreekumar. The tale is about two friends, Roy (Vineeth Sreenivasan) and Sanju (Vinu Mohan), struggling to make both ends meet with their low salaries, working respectively as a cashier in a private finance company and as a salesman in an electronics goods shop. It was a box office success.

Synopsis

The film, set at City Centre, a shopping mall in Kochi as backdrop, is all about a few youngsters, Roy and Sanju and their love interests, Annie and Meenakshy. Long-ignored and mistreated by society for reasons none of theirs, they decide to take matters into their own hands. Roy (Vineeth Sreenivasan) is an accountant in a private financing company of Kaustubhan, (deftly played with ease and characteristic gags by Jagathy) who pays his staff, the modest of all salaries. Sanju (Vinu Mohan) is a desperate cricketer, left out of Ranji team, who is working in the same commercial mall in an electronics shop. Roy has a soft corner for Annie (Bhama) who works as a receptionist in a travel agency in the same complex. And Meenakshy (Sandhya), the daughter of Kaushtubhan, is madly in love, always chasing Sanju.

Cycle (album)

Cycle is an album by the Japanese noise musician Merzbow. It features recordings of Masami Akita's pet chickens. Material from this album was performed live at Radio Nova in Oslo, which was released as Mini Cycle / Yoshino Tamago / Yonos Bigfoot.

Chain (algebraic topology)

In algebraic topology, a simplicial k-chain is a formal linear combination of k-simplices.

Integration on chains

Integration is defined on chains by taking the linear combination of integrals over the simplices in the chain with coefficients typically integers. The set of all k-chains forms a group and the sequence of these groups is called a chain complex.

Boundary operator on chains

The boundary of a chain is the linear combination of boundaries of the simplices in the chain. The boundary of a k-chain is a (k−1)-chain. Baseball

Baseball is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of nine players each who take turns batting and fielding.

The batting team attempts to score runs by hitting a ball that is thrown by the pitcher with a bat swung by the batter, then running counter-clockwise around a series of four bases: first, second, third, and home plate. A run is scored when a player advances around the bases and returns to home plate.

Players on the batting team take turns hitting against the pitcher of the fielding team, which tries to prevent runs by getting hitters out in any of several ways. A player on the batting team who reaches a base safely can later attempt to advance to subsequent bases during teammates' turns batting, such as on a hit or by other means. The teams switch between batting and fielding whenever the fielding team records three outs. One turn batting for both teams, beginning with the visiting team, constitutes an inning. A game comprises nine innings, and the team with the greater number of runs at the end of the game wins. Baseball is the only major team sport in America with no game clock, although almost all games end in the ninth inning.

A baseball is a ball used in the sport of the same name, baseball. The ball features a rubber or cork center, wrapped in yarn, and covered, in the words of the Official Baseball Rules "with two strips of white horsehide or cowhide, tightly stitched together." It is 9.00–9.25 inches (228.60–234.95 mm) in circumference, (2.86–2.94 in or 72.64–74.68 mm in diameter), and masses from 5.00 to 5.25 ounces (141.75 to 148.83 g). The yarn or string used to wrap the baseball can be up to one mile (1.6 km) in length. Some are wrapped in a plastic-like covering.

A significant characteristic of the baseball is the stitching that holds together the covering of the ball. After a ball has been pitched, these raised stitches act like wings on a plane, catching the wind and causing the ball to swerve slightly on its way to the catcher. Whether the ball swerves to the right, to the left, downward, or a combination thereof, and whether it swerves sharply or gradually, depends on which direction, and how fast, the stitches have been made to spin by the pitcher.
