Alla breve

Alla breve is a musical meter notated by the time signature symbol (a C with a line through it), which is the equivalent of 2/2. The term is Italian for "in the style of the breve".

Alla breve is a "simple-duple meter with a half-note pulse". The note denomination which represents one beat in is the minim or half-note. There are two of these per bar, so that the time signature 2/2 may be interpreted as "two minim beats per bar."

Breve in Italian means short (for a period of time) and alla breve is also known as cut time or cut common time. (Common time, notated with the time signature symbol , is the equivalent of 4/4,. It deploys a crotchet or quarter-note beat and there are four per bar.)

Modern usage

In contemporary usage alla breve suggests a fairly quick tempo. Thus, it is used frequently for military marches. From about 1600 to 1900 its usage with regard to tempo varied, so it cannot always be taken to mean a quick tempo. The reason for the usage of "alla breve" is to allow the musician to read notes of short duration more cleanly with fewer beats.
