Culture (disambiguation)

Culture may refer to:

  • Culture, several meanings related to objects and processes which we respect as material or spiritual values.
  • Science

    Biological cultures

  • Cell culture, the cultivation of cells of multi-cellular eukaryotes, such as animals
  • Organ culture, the cultivation of part or all of an animal organ outside of the body
  • Tissue culture, the cultivation of tissues from multi-cellular organisms outside of the body
  • Plant tissue culture, the cultivation of plant cells, tissues or organs
  • Microbiological culture, the cultivation of microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses and yeast
  • Aquaculture, the of aquatic organisms such as fish, crustaceans, molluscs, seaweed and aquatic plants
  • Mariculture, a specialized branch of aquaculture involving the cultivation of marine organisms for food and other products in the open ocean
  • Viral culture, a laboratory test in which samples are placed with a cell type that the virus being tested for is able to infect
  • Microbiological culture

A microbiological culture, or microbial culture, is a method of multiplying microbial organisms by letting them reproduce in predetermined culture media under controlled laboratory conditions. Microbial cultures are used to determine the type of organism, its abundance in the sample being tested, or both. It is one of the primary diagnostic methods of microbiology and used as a tool to determine the cause of infectious disease by letting the agent multiply in a predetermined medium. For example, a throat culture is taken by scraping the lining of tissue in the back of the throat and blotting the sample into a medium to be able to screen for harmful microorganisms, such as Streptococcus pyogenes, the causative agent of strep throat. Furthermore, the term culture is more generally used informally to refer to "selectively growing" a specific kind of microorganism in the lab.

Microbial cultures are foundational and basic diagnostic methods used extensively as a research tool in molecular biology. It is often essential to isolate a pure culture of microorganisms. A pure (or axenic) culture is a population of cells or multicellular organisms growing in the absence of other species or types. A pure culture may originate from a single cell or single organism, in which case the cells are genetic clones of one another.

    Archaeological culture

An archaeological culture is a recurring assemblage of artifacts from a specific time and place, which may constitute the material culture remains of a particular past human society. The connection between the artifacts is based on archaeologists' understanding and interpretation and does not necessarily relate to real groups of humans in the past. The concept of archaeological culture is fundamental to culture-historical archaeology.

    Concept

Different cultural groups have material culture items which differ both functionally and aesthetically due to varying cultural and social practices. This notion is observably true on the broadest scales. For example, the equipment associated with the brewing of tea varies greatly across the world (see images). Social relations to material culture often include notions of identity and status.

Advocates of culture-historical archaeology use this notion to argue that sets of material culture can be used to trace ancient groups of people that were either self-identifying societies or ethnic groups. The classic definition of this idea comes from Gordon Childe:

    Momentum

In classical mechanics, linear momentum or translational momentum (pl. momenta; SI unit kg m/s, or equivalently, Newton second) is the product of the mass and velocity of an object. For example, a heavy truck moving rapidly has a large momentum—it takes a large or prolonged force to get the truck up to this speed, and it takes a large or prolonged force to bring it to a stop afterwards. If the truck were lighter, or moving more slowly, then it would have less momentum.

Like velocity, linear momentum is a vector quantity, possessing a direction as well as a magnitude:

where p is the three-dimensional vector stating the object's momentum in the three directions of three-dimensional space, v is the three-dimensional velocity vector giving the object's rate of movement in each direction, and m is the object's mass.

Linear momentum is also a conserved quantity, meaning that if a closed system is not affected by external forces, its total linear momentum cannot change.

In classical mechanics, conservation of linear momentum is implied by Newton's laws. It also holds in special relativity (with a modified formula) and, with appropriate definitions, a (generalized) linear momentum conservation law holds in electrodynamics, quantum mechanics, quantum field theory, and general relativity. It is ultimately an expression of one of the fundamental symmetries of space and time, that of translational symmetry.

    Momentum (Steve Lacy album)

Momentum is the first album by Steve Lacy to be released on the Arista Novus label. It was released in 1987 and features six of Lacy's compositions (although tracks 2 and 3 only appeared on the CD edition) with texts by Giulia Niccolai, Herman Melville, and Brion Gysin performed by Lacy, Bobby Few, Steve Potts, Jean-Jacques Avenel, Oliver Johnson and Irene Aebi.

    Reception

The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 4½ stars stating "On Steve Lacy's first album for an American label in over a decade, his sextet is heard on four extensive originals by the great soprano saxophonist. The music is complex yet often melodic and, although Irene Aebi takes typically eccentric vocals on two of the songs, the main reasons to acquire this album are for the thoughtful yet unpredictable solos of Lacy and altoist Steve Potts. ".

    Track listing

  • "The Bath" - 13:03
  • "The Gaze" - 11:10
  • "Utah" (text by Giulia Niccolai) - 6:58
  • "Art" (text by Herman Melville) - 8:56
  • "Momentum" - 7:58
  • Momentum (electromagnetic simulator)

Momentum is 3-D planar EM simulation software for electronics and antenna analysis, a partial differential equation solver of Maxwell's equations based on the method of moments. It is a 3-D planar electromagnetic (EM) simulator used for passive circuit analysis.

It combines full-wave and quasi-static EM solvers to provide insight into EM behavior of MMIC, RFIC, RF Board, Signal Integrity, and antenna designs. The Momentum simulation engine is integrated into Keysight ADS and Keysight Genesys.

It was originally developed by a Belgian company, Alphabit, a spinoff from IMEC. Early contributors to the technology include Niels Faché, Jan Van Hese, Frank Libbrecht, Jeannick Sercu, Luc Vandormael, Mieke Herreman, Peter Kok, Tom Dhaene and Krist Blomme.

The company was acquired by Hewlett-Packard, later it became part of Agilent Technologies and since November 2014 it is part of Keysight Technologies EEsof division, the current owners.
