Crying

Crying is the shedding of tears in response to an emotional state. The act of crying has been defined as "a complex secretomotor phenomenon characterized by the shedding of tears from the lacrimal apparatus, without any irritation of the ocular structures". A related medical term is lacrimation, which also refers to non-emotional shedding of tears. Crying is also known as weeping, wailing, whimpering, and bawling.

For crying to be described as sobbing, it usually has to be accompanied by a set of other symptoms, such as slow but erratic inhalation, occasional instances of breath holding and muscular tremor.

A neuronal connection between the lacrimal gland (tear duct) and the areas of the human brain involved with emotion has been established. There is debate among scientists over whether or not humans are the only animals that produce tears in response to emotional states.Charles Darwin wrote in The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals that the keepers of Indian elephants in the London Zoo told him that their charges shed tears in sorrow.

Crying (album)

Crying is an album released in 1962 by Roy Orbison. It was his second album on the Monument Record label. The album name comes from the 1961 hit song of the same name that in 2002 was honored with a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. In 2004, the song ranked #69 on Rolling Stone Magazine's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

Crying (Beavis and Butt-head)

"Crying" is the second episode of Season 8 and 202nd episode overall of the American animated television series Beavis and Butt-head. It aired alongside "Werewolves of Highland" on October 27, 2011 on MTV.

Plot

Beavis and Butt-head watch an episode of The Bachelor. While eating a chili dog, Beavis finds an onion, which causes a tear to run down his eye. Butt-head starts making fun of him for it, believing that it was the show that made him cry. Later when they are walking down the street and in school, Butt-head still makes fun of Beavis and announces to Mr. Van Driessen and the other students that he cried, which annoys Beavis. During gym class, Butt-head annoys Beavis to the point that he tries to attack him, but Coach Buzzcut intervenes by grabbing him. Cutting to 80 years later, the duo are seen in a retirement home, where Butt-head is still giving Beavis a hard time for "crying", but he dies shortly afterward, much to Beavis's delight.

"Crying" is a ballad written by Roy Orbison and Joe Melson that was a hit for Orbison.

Composition

Dave Marsh calls the song a "rock-bolero" with "blaring strings, hammered tympani, a ghostly chorus, the gentle strum of a guitar, [and] a hint of marimba".Billboard observes an "expressive reading" on the "country-flavored ballad." The personnel on the original recording included Orbison session regulars Bob Moore on bass, Floyd Cramer on piano, Buddy Harman on drums, and Boudleaux Bryant, Harold Bradley and Scotty Moore on guitar.

Release and reception

The song was released as a 45-rpm single by Monument Records in July 1961 and reached No. 1 on the United States Cashbox chart for a week on October 7, 1961, and peaking at No. 2 on the rival Billboard Hot 100. Despite not reaching the summit in the latter publication, Billboard ranked the record as the No. 4 song of 1961.

In 1987, Orbison rerecorded the song as a duet with K.D. Lang as part of the soundtrack for the motion picture Hiding Out. Their collaboration won the Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals. The duet version was a minor US chart hit for the pair, peaking at No. 42 on the hot country singles chart, though it was a more substantial hit in the UK in 1992, reaching No. 13 on the UK Singles Chart.
