Bank (geography)

In geography a bank generally refers to the land alongside a body of water. Various structures are referred to as banks in different fields of geography.

In limnology, the study of inland waters, a stream bank or river bank is the terrain alongside the bed of a river, creek, or stream. Stream banks are of particular interest in fluvial geography, which studies the processes associated with rivers and streams and the deposits and landforms created by them. The shoreline of ponds, swamps, estuarys, reservoirs, or lakes are also of interest in limnology, and are sometimes referred to as banks. The grade of these banks or shorelines can vary from vertical to a shallow slope.

In freshwater ecology, banks are of interest as the location of riparian habitats. Riparian zones occur along upland and lowland river and stream beds. The ecology around and depending on a marsh, swamp, slough, or estuary, sometimes called a bank, is likewise studied in freshwater ecology.

Banks are also of interest in navigation, where the term can refer either to a barrier island or a submerged plateau. A barrier island is a long narrow island composed of sand and forming a barrier between an island lagoon or sound and the ocean. A submerged plateau is a relatively flat topped elevation of the sea floor at shallow depth (generally less than 200m), typically on the continental shelf or near an island.

"River Bank", also "River bank Coverly" and "River Bank Coberley", is a traditional Jamaican song. The song is an old Jamaican mento standard. It has been adapted both by Reggae musicians, and also by jazz musicians, such as trumpeter Baba Brooks who reworked "River Bank" into "Bank to Bank".

Cross River (New York)

The Cross River is a short river in southern New York State that rises near Cross River in the township of Lewisboro. After its rising point, it makes a loop, heading SE, then SW, then NW, and finally west. It flows a few miles in that direction until it ends up in the Cross River Reservoir, which supplies New York City with drinking water. It flows out of the spillway at the end of the reservoir, and continues further until it joins the Croton River in Katonah.

The short stretch of river that begins at the spillway outlet and continues on to the river's entry into the Muscoot Reservoir is an outstanding early spring trout fishery.

In October 2011, lawyer Samuel Friedlander shot both of his children in their beds and bludgeoned his wife Amy, who was in the process of divorcing him, to death. Then he went down into his basement and shot himself. This murder-suicide occurred in the small hamlet of Cross River.

Cross River (Nigeria)

Cross River (of which its native name is Oyono) is the main river in southeastern Nigeria and gives its name to Cross River State. It originates in Cameroon, where it takes the name of the Manyu River. Although not long by African standards its catchment has high rainfall and it becomes very wide. Over its last 80 kilometres (50 mi) to the sea its flows through swampy rainforest with numerous creeks and forms an inland delta near its confluence with the Calabar River, about 20 kilometres (12 mi) wide and 50 kilometres (31 mi) long between the cities of Oron on the west bank and Calabar, on the east bank, more than 30 kilometres (19 mi) from the open sea. The delta empties into a broad estuary which it shares with a few smaller rivers. At its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean, the estuary is 24 kilometres (15 mi) wide. The eastern side of the estuary is in the neighbouring country of Cameroon.

The major tributary of cross river is the river Aloma coming from Benue State to merge with the cross river in cross river state. Cross River State is connected with a major highway to its sister state Akwa Ibom. The distance between Oron and Calabar is 21 kilometres (13 mi) by boat and about 200 kilometres (120 mi) by road. The population of the lower Cross River traditionally use water transport and Calabar has long had a major seaport, in the Calabar River about 10 kilometres (6 mi) from its confluence with the Cross River and about 55 kilometres (34 mi) from the sea. The Itu bridge on the Cross River is along Ikom-Calabar highway and is reported to be one of the landmark achievements of the Gowon administration when it was completed in 1975.

History

Cross River Bank was founded in 2008, by French-born Gilles Gade. Gade has been cited to have started the Bank when he noticed an opportunity in community banking during the financial crisis of 2007–08.

Services

In addition to traditional banking services including business checking and savings accounts, Cross River Bank offers loans processed through peer-to-peer lending portals including Lending Club, Pave,Upstart, Affirm, Marlette Funding,Prosper and PayPal's small business lending arm. In October 2015, Cross River Bank announced a $100 million securitization with Marlette funding.

In 2014, Cross River Bank became one of the first U.S. banks to introduce cross-border commercial banking services in collaboration with Ripple. Using the Ripple payment protocol, the bank started offering real-time international payments between the U.S. and Western Europe.
