Cromwell (play)

Cromwell is a play by Victor Hugo, written in 1827. It was influenced by Hugo's literary circle, which identified itself as Romanticist and chose as a model dramatist Shakespeare instead of the Classicists Jean Racine and Pierre Corneille (who were supported by the French Academy).

Due to its length of 6920 verses as well as the logistical problems of recreating Hugo's absurdly large cast of characters, the play remained unperformed until 1956. It tells the story of Oliver Cromwell's internal conflicts in being offered the crown of England. It is notable for its preface, now considered the manifesto of the Romantic movement.

Play (Robyn song)

"Play" is a song by Swedish recording artist Robyn from her second studio album My Truth (1999). Robyn wrote the track in collaboration with Ulf Lindström and Johan Ekhé, who also helmed production. BMG Sweden released it as the album's second single on 21 July 1999 with the non-album song "Good Thang" as its B-side. Musically, "Play" contains some world music influences and a "playful" vibe.

"Play" received positive critical response and became Robyn's seventh consecutive top 40 entry on the Sverigetopplistan singles chart, where it peaked at number 31. The singer performed the song live while promoting the parent album, but the single itself received limited promotion. As with the album, "Play" was not serviced outside of Sweden.

Background and composition

"Play" was written by Robyn, Ulf Lindström and Johan Ekhé. Lindström and Ekhé recorded Robyn's vocals and produced the track at Lifeline Studios in Stockholm, Sweden. Almnils Erson, Pär-Ola Claesson, Gunilla Markström and Olle Markström played the strings and Niklas Gabrielsson provided handclaps, while Lindström and Ekhé played all other instruments. The duo also managed arrangement and mixing; both these tasks were done at Lifeline Studios. Britta Bergström and Angela Holland sang backing vocals alongside Robyn. Björn Engelmann and Henrik Jonsson were enlisted to master the track at Cutting Room Studios in Stockholm.

Cromwell (tragedy)

Cromwell is an 1820 verse tragedy by Honoré de Balzac. When it was finished, it was reviewed by a man named Andrieux, the former tutor of Eugène Surville, Balzac's sister. On the manuscript, Andrieux wrote: "The author should do anything he likes, but not literature."

The Cromwell Las Vegas

The Cromwell Las Vegas is a luxury boutique hotel and casino on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, owned by Caesars Entertainment. It was built as the Barbary Coast Hotel & Casino and was later known as Bill's Gamblin' Hall and Saloon.

History

The property was the site of Empey's Desert Villa from 1952. The casino was built by Michael Gaughan and opened in March 1979 at a cost of $11.5 million. Over time, this property, along with others owned by Gaughan would become Coast Casinos Inc. Gaughan shared partnership in the Barbary Coast with Kenny Epstein, Tito Tiberti, Frank Toti and Jerry Herbst.

In July 2005, Boyd Gaming purchased the Barbary Coast Hotel.

In September 2005, Boyd purchased the 4.3 acres (1.7 ha) of land the hotel occupied for $16 million. The hotel had previously been leasing the land.

In 2007, Boyd gave the Barbary Coast to Harrah's Entertainment in exchange for the 24-acre (9.7 ha) site of the demolished Westward Ho, to be used for the Echelon Place project. The Barbary Coast closed at 2:00 a.m. on February 27 and reopened on March 1 as the newly rebranded as Bill's Gamblin Hall and Saloon, in honor of company founder Bill Harrah.
