Cristal Global

Cristal Global is the world's second-largest producer of titanium dioxide and a leading producer of titanium chemicals. It was formed when The National Titanium Dioxide Company Ltd. combined with Millennium Chemicals. The headquarters are in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It is a significant shareholder in Bemax, the world’s 5th largest TiO₂ feedstock producer.

Cristal (wine)

Cristal is the brand name of a Champagne produced by Louis Roederer. Cristal has a flat-bottomed clear, "crystal" bottle, anti-UV cellophane wrapper, and gold label. Widespread awareness of its high price has given the wine an image of exclusivity that, in turn, has elevated demand: it is considered a Veblen good. The most recently released vintages are the 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2002, and 2000.

History

Cristal was first created in 1876 for Alexander II of Russia, and is viewed by many as the first prestige cuvée. As the political situation in Russia at the time of his rule was unstable, the Tsar feared assassination. He ordered that champagne bottles for his Three Emperors Dinner be made clear, so that he could see the bubbles and also to prevent hiding a bomb within them, as could happen with a typical dark green bottle. Louis Roederer commissioned a Flemish glassmaker to create a clear lead glass Champagne bottle with a flat bottom. The Champagne has since become known as "Cristal".

Colombia

An aguardiente of the guaro (drink) type named Cristal is produced in Manizales, Colombia in 1950 by Sergio Castro Brandon (Licorera de Manizales). The Colombian brand is a guaro, which means it is made by distilling fermented sugar cane juice. It is the most imported label of guaro in the United States.

Ecuador

The Ecuadorian brand of aguardiente named Cristal is marketed on a national scale. Like its closest competitor, Zhumir it is sometimes, incorrectly, called rum.

Origins

Cristal is produced by Embotelladora Azuaya S.A. and has been offered for 45 years. however the tradition of making and bottling aguardiente in the valleys of the province of Azuay goes back much further. As with Zhumir, Cristal grows the cane for its product in Azuay, and has its headquarters in Cuenca. The brand name Cristal refers to the complete clarity of the original aguardiente, which is visually indistinguishable from pure water.

Global (cutlery)

Global (often written in all capitalized letters as GLOBAL) is a brand of cutlery products made by Yoshikin of Japan. Their selection of knives are known for their distinctive one piece, molybdenum/vanadium stainless steel design. These are considered premium level products with a single knife often costing upwards of $100 (USD). Global products can often be found at specialty cooking retailers.

Compared to conventional European knives such as PUMA,J. A. Henckels or Wusthof, Global knives are made from a significantly harder alloy of steel, use a thinner blade thickness, and are ground to a narrower angle. This produces an extremely sharp knife which keeps its edge longer and allows for more accurate work, but takes longer to sharpen when it becomes dull. Because of this, the manufacturer recommends using whetstones and ceramic sharpening rods as opposed to the European sharpening steel. In addition, Global knives are renowned for their surprisingly light weight and even balance, a trait achieved by hollowing out the handle during production.
