Crescent Street

Crescent Street (French: rue Crescent) is a southbound street located in downtown Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Running perpendicular to Saint Catherine Street, Crescent Street descends from Sherbrooke Street south to René Lévesque Boulevard.

Crescent Street is a popular attraction for both tourists and locals alike. North of De Maisonneuve Boulevard, one can find many luxury boutiques and art galleries in a Victorian architectural setting. To the south of de Maisonneuve the concentration of nightclubs, bars and restaurants makes Crescent Street one Montreal's most well-known nightlife strips.

History

The street which opened around 1860, was originally in the form of a crescent, and was located just north of Dorchester Boulevard.

The first bar on Crescent Street opened in 1967. Prior to that year, the street was home mainly to professional offices. The first bar was the Sir Winston Churchill Pub, a pub partly owned by Johnny Vago a Hungarian immigrant who once participated in the Cuban Revolution. Vago's discotheque, originally known as the Don Juan, was first located on nearby Stanley Street. It relocated as a basement pub (sans the dance floor) on Crescent after the Stanley street building's basement had to be re-engineered, as parts of the Don Juan's dance floor had begun to fall into the Montreal Metro tunnel then being dug right beside it.

Crescent Street (BMT Jamaica Line)

Crescent Street is a station on the BMT Jamaica Line of the New York City Subway. Located at the intersection of Crescent and Fulton Streets in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn, it is served by the J train at all times and the Z during rush hours in the peak direction.

Station layout

This elevated station, opened on May 30, 1893, has two tracks and one narrow island platform. An arched canopy covers the eastern half (railroad north) of the platform and the station's small, single station house is on this extreme end on the same level. It has a turnstile bank, token booth, and a single staircase going to an overpass below the tracks that splits into two staircases going down to either side of Fulton Street between Crescent and Pine Streets.

An artwork called Wheel of Bloom – Soak Up the Sun by Jung Hyang Kim was installed in this station during a 2007 renovation. It consists of stained glass panels on the platform's sign structures showing subway train wheels lit by sunlight.

Crescent Street (BMT Fulton Street Line)

Crescent Street was a station on the demolished BMT Fulton Street Line. It had two tracks and two side platforms. It was served by trains of the BMT Fulton Street Line. The next stop to the east was Grant Avenue. The station was opened on July 16, 1894, and is one of three stations to extend the Fulton Street Line closer to Queens. The next stop to the west was Chestnut Street. On November 28, 1948, the Independent Subway System built the underground Euclid Avenue Subway station two blocks west after years of war-time construction delays. This station rendered both Crescent Street Station and the nearby Chestnut Street station obsolete, and it closed on April 26, 1956.

An historical remnant of the station is the set-back property line along Crescent Street, where station access had been provided.
