Neneh Cherry

Neneh Mariann Karlsson (born 10 March 1964), better known as Neneh Cherry, is a Swedish-born singer-songwriter, rapper, and occasional DJ and broadcaster.

Early life and family

Cherry was born as Neneh Karlsson in Stockholm, the daughter of Monica "Moki" Karlsson, a Swedish painter and textile artist, and the musician Ahmadu Jah. Jah was born in Sierra Leone, the son of a chief. He went to Stockholm to study engineering at university.

Cherry's mother married the influential American jazz musician Don Cherry, who helped raise Cherry since birth. Cherry took her stepfather's surname.

Cherry has a half-sister, singer Titiyo, and half-brother, record producer Cherno Jah, from her father Ahmadu Jah's marriage to Maylen Jah (née Bergström). Cherry also has a half-brother, musician Eagle-Eye Cherry, a stepsister, violinist Jan Cherry, and a stepbrother, jazz musician David Ornette Cherry from stepfather Don Cherry's side.

Cherry's parents, Moki and Don Cherry, bought and converted an old schoolhouse in the countryside outside the small town of Hässleholm in Sweden in 1970. In the early 1970s, the family moved to the United States, when Don Cherry taught at Dartmouth College. Cherry dropped out of school at 14 and moved to London.

Prenatal cocaine exposure

Prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE) occurs when a pregnant woman uses cocaine and thereby exposes her fetus to the drug. "Crack baby" was a term coined to describe children who were exposed to crack (freebase cocaine in smokable form) as fetuses; the concept of the crack baby emerged in the US during the 1980s and 1990s in the midst of a crack epidemic. Other terms are "Cocaine baby" and "Crack kid". Early studies reported that people who had been exposed to crack in utero would be severely emotionally, mentally, and physically disabled; this belief became common in the scientific and lay communities. Fears were widespread that a generation of crack babies were going to put severe strain on society and social services as they grew up. Later studies failed to substantiate the findings of earlier ones that PCE has severe disabling consequences; these earlier studies had been methodologically flawed (e.g. with small sample sizes and confounding factors). Scientists have come to understand that the findings of the early studies were vastly overstated and that most people who were exposed to cocaine in utero do not have disabilities.

  • Tricky (TV series)

Tricky was a British children's animated television programme that aired in the ITV Network's children's strand CITV on Saturday mornings from 30 August to 20 December 1997. It was the first live children's show hosted by an animated character - a talking dragon named Tricky. His co-host was a strange dragon-cat hybrid, who hatched from an egg in the third show, and was called 'Purrdy' because of a competition won by a 5-year-old girl from Dunoon, Leanne Campbell. Claudia Winkleman made frequent appearances on the show, and Tricky would usually call her 'Claudia Winklebottom'. The second edition of Tricky was pre-empted by Princess Diana's funeral. The showed was produced by Real Time Animation for Granada Television.

The show didn't prove to be all that popular, and only lasted for one series. But Tricky made a comeback to TV screens in 2003; he was renamed 'Rorry', though Purrdy kept her name, and hosted the kid's channel POP!.

  • Tricky (musician)

Adrian Nicholas Matthews Thaws (born 27 January 1968), better known by his stage name Tricky, is an English record producer, vocalist, director, actor, and musician. He began his career as an early collaborator of Massive Attack before embarking on a solo career with his debut album, Maxinquaye, in 1995. The release won Tricky popular acclaim and marked the beginning of a lengthy collaborative partnership with vocalist Martina Topley-Bird. He released four more studio albums before the end of the decade, including Pre-Millennium Tension and the pseudonymous Nearly God, both in 1996. He has gone on to release six studio albums since 2000, most recently the self-titled Adrian Thaws (2014).

Often considered a pioneer of the trip hop style that rose to prominence in the UK during the 1990s, Tricky is noted for his whispering, sprechgesang vocal approach and a dark, layered musical style that draws on disparate cultural influences and genres, including hip hop, alternative rock and ragga. He has collaborated with a wide range of artists over the course of his career, including Terry Hall, Björk, Gravediggaz, Grace Jones, Massive Attack and PJ Harvey.

    SASSY

    So sassy...
    So sassy...
Fellas got to give me the most respect
Cause you know I don't like to waste my time
    So don't give me that
I'm laying down I syzzle slow
I might be tripping but I do my thing
I play the games like monkey in the middle - not -
Piece by piece like a puzzle we come together
    Guru...
"You never seen a girl like this before
Because she's so sassy completely secure
Check out the way she walks and talks
She got the force to knock it out the box
Now I know this lady for some time
    Yes of course she's fine
The only one of her kind - buss it
The lady has so much pazzaz if you step
To her wrong you're getting played the jazz"
    Conversations
    Don't say the most
Along the way I've heard some boasting
I roll my dice and take what comes
    Numbers, numbers, numbers
As I hang with my chums
I count my lucky days - cause I know when they come
If you're looking for a ride boy watch me run
    All the way to China
Or just between peace and man
    "On yes she's nifty-hefty
    The beat plays on
She's bout to rip the roof from
    Dusk to dawn
So when you see lady for must give her props
    Keep the champagne floran?
    Until the music stop
I'm man of my time she's a woman of hers to
Old fashioned but still stashing a few
    New styles for roughneck rude
So I'm gonna stuff it in your face like gourmet food. "
And hooked like a picture and look to the wall
And hanging like Picasso seems so tall
Voluptous I had a choice to be monagomous
Me and my baby forgot to check what day it was
Under the covers kissing the way it was
Freshly squeezed so pure and natural
unique in character and this is factual.
    So sassy...
