Alpine Rally

The Alpine Rally, also known by its official name Coupe des Alpes, was a rally competition based in Marseille and held from 1932 to 1971. In the 1950s and the 1960s, it was among the most prestigious rallies in the world and featured an international route, consisting of famous mountain passes in Europe.

History

The rally was first held in 1932 under the name Rallye des Alpes Françaises. After World War II, it continued as the Rallye International des Alpes in 1946. Although the event still started and finished in France, the route became international in 1948 and until 1965 featured famous mountain passes in Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. In 1953, the Alpine Rally was included in the inaugural European Rally Championship (ERC) calendar. The rally was very popular during its heyday; Autocar wrote in 1958 that "without doubt, the Alpine Rally was one of the most formidable motoring events of any type in the international calendar." The car manufacturer Alpine was named after the event in 1955, as was Sunbeam's sports car Alpine in 1953.

Compagnie des Alpes (Euronext: CDA) is a French company created in 1989 to operate many ski resorts in Europe. Compagnie des Alpes is a part of Caisse des dépôts et consignations.

History

Compagnie des Alpes was first established in 1989 as a ski resort operator. Since 2001, Compagnie des Alpes's activity has extended to theme parks including the Walibi parks. The Walibi parks used to be owned by an independent company run by Belgian Eddy Meeus. They were then sold off to American company Six Flags, however, due to financial problems they were sold again – this time to Compagnie des Alpes. The company has plans to expand the Walibi brand of theme parks with five of their current locations expected to be converted into Walibi parks.

Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes

Catherine Ribeiro (alongside Mama Bea Tekielski and Brigitte Fontaine) is possibly the most unique voice in French rock. Often referred as the French Nico, her Portuguese origins are responsible of the unique character of her voice.

Born in 1941 and raised in a working-class family, she started her career as an actress. Her first appearance was in 1963 Jean-Luc Godard's film "Les Carabiniers" where she met Patrice Moullet (acting the principal role). It was in 1967 that Moullet, then interested in music, proposed to compose music for her poetry. They formed the band 2 BIS (soon to be renamed ALPES) and proved the ideal vehicle for Ribeiro's extraordinary voice, on the seven classic albums they produced together. Ahead of a conventional rock format, their music was a unique amalgam of progressive underground, with vast spacey instrumental passages due to Moullet's home-made instruments (percuphone, cosmophone & orgolia), much improvised weirdness and a strong folk influence.

Dessie

Dessie (Amharic: ደሴ^?) (also spelled Dese or Dessye), is a city and a woreda in north-central Ethiopia. Located in the Debub Wollo Zone of the Amhara Region, it sits at a latitude and longitude of 11°8′N 39°38′E / 11.133°N 39.633°E / 11.133; 39.633, with an elevation between 2,470 and 2,550 metres above sea level.

Dessie is located along Ethiopian Highway 1. It has postal service (a post office was established in the 1920s), and telephone service from at least as early as 1954. The city has had electrical power since at least 1963 when a new diesel-powered electric power station with a power line to Kombolcha was completed, at a cost of Eth$ 110,000. Intercity bus service is provided by the Selam Bus Line Share Company. Dessie shares Combolcha Airport (ICAO code HADC, IATA DSE) with neighbouring Kombolcha.

Dessie is home to a museum, in the former home of Dejazmach Yoseph Birru. It also has a zawiya of the Qadiriyya order of Islam, which was the first Sufi order to be introduced into north-east Africa.
