Capital Region of Denmark

The Capital Region of Denmark (Danish: Region Hovedstaden) is the easternmost administrative region of Denmark, established on January 1, 2007 as part of the 2007 Danish Municipal Reform, which replaced the traditional counties (Danish plural: amter, singular: amt) with five larger regions. At the same time, smaller municipalities were merged into larger units, cutting the number of municipalities from 271 before 1 January 2006, when Ærø Municipality was created, to 98. The reform was implemented on January 1, 2007.

Overview

The Capital Region of Denmark consists of the municipalities of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg, the former counties of Copenhagen and Frederiksborg, and the regional municipality of Bornholm. In Danish the name is Region Hovedstaden, which is one of five regions in Denmark.

Without the remote island municipality Bornholm, located 150 km (93 mi) southeast of Copenhagen, the population is over 1,700,000 (January 1, 2014) on an area of 1,978.91 km² (764 sq. m.) (according to www.noegletal.dk) with a density of over 860 per km² (2,230 per sq m), as opposed to over 680 (1,760) with all 29 municipalities included.

Capital Region (Iceland)

Greater Reykjavík (Icelandic: Höfuðborgarsvæðið, meaning "The Capital Region") is a name used collectively for Reykjavík and six municipalities around it. The area is by far the largest urban area in Iceland. Each municipality has its independent elected council. With a population of 200,852, Greater Reykjavík comprises over 60% of the population of Iceland in an area that is only just over 1% of the total size of the country. Municipal governments cooperate extensively in various fields; for example with waste policy, shared public transport and a joint fire brigade.

Size and population

Of the seven municipalities in the Greater Reykjavík Area, Reykjavík is by far the most populated with 117,764 inhabitants and Kjósarhreppur is the least populated with 210 inhabitants. Kjósarhreppur is however the largest of the eight with 287.7 km² (111.1 sq mi) of land and Seltjarnarnes is the smallest with 2.3 km² (0.89 sq mi).

Copenhagen

Copenhagen (IPA /ˌkoʊpənˈheɪɡən/;Danish: København [kʰøb̥m̩ˈhɑʊ̯ˀn] ( listen); also known by other alternative names) is the capital and most populated city of Denmark with an urban population of 1,263,698 (as of 1 January 2015) and a metropolitan population of 2,013,009 (as of 1 October 2015). It is situated on the eastern coast of Zealand, 164 km (102 mi) east of Odense and 28 km (17 mi) northwest of Malmö, Sweden. The city itself is divided in several municipalities. The core "Copenhagen Municipality" for example contains the enclave of Frederiksberg, a municipality in its own right.

Copenhagen (2002 film)

Copenhagen is a 2002 British television drama film written and directed by Howard Davies, and starring Daniel Craig, Stephen Rea, and Francesca Annis. It is based in Michael Frayn's 1998 Tony Award-winning three-character play of the same name.

Synopsis

The story concerns a meeting between the physicists Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg in Copenhagen in 1941 to discuss their work and past friendship, and also revolves around Heisenberg's role in the German atomic bomb program during World War II.

The film was first broadcast on BBC Four on 26 September 2002, preceded by a prologue with Frayn, and followed by an epilogue by Michio Kaku and a documentary on the historical events. It was broadcast in the United States on Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) Public television.

København (ship)

København was a Danish five-masted barque used as a naval training vessel until its disappearance after December 22, 1928. Built for the Danish East Asiatic Company in 1921, it was the world's largest sailing ship at the time, and primarily served for sail training of young cadets.

The København was last heard from on December 21, 1928 while en route from Buenos Aires to Australia. When it became clear the ship was missing, a lengthy search ensued, but turned up no trace. The disappearance has become one of the greatest maritime mysteries of the modern era, and led to much speculation about the ship's ultimate fate.

Description

The København was built by the firm of Ramage and Ferguson at Leith in Scotland (number 256), begun in 1913 but not completed until March 24, 1921. It was constructed for the Danish East Asiatic Company as a sail training ship. Known as the "Big Dane", it was the largest sailing ship in the world when completed. It was 430 feet (131 metres) long and grossed 3,965 tons; its five masts stood nearly 20 stories high with sails spanning a total of 56,000 square feet (5,202 square metres). It had an auxiliary diesel motor as well as a wireless transmitter. The figurehead was a carving of a helmeted Bishop Absalon.
