Stratigraphic unit

A stratigraphic unit is a volume of rock of identifiable origin and relative age range that is defined by the distinctive and dominant, easily mapped and recognizable petrographic, lithologic or paleontologic features (facies) that characterize it.

Units must be mappable and distinct from one another, but the contact need not be particularly distinct. For instance, a unit may be defined by terms such as "when the sandstone component exceeds 75%".

Lithostratigraphic units

Sequences of sedimentary and volcanic rocks are subdivided on the basis of their lithology. Going from smaller to larger in scale, the main units recognised are Bed, Member, Formation, Group and Supergroup.

Bed

A bed is a lithologically distinct layer within a member or formation and is the smallest recognisable stratigraphic unit. These are not normally named, but may be in the case of a marker horizon.

Member

A member is a named lithologically distinct part of a formation. Not all formations are subdivided in this way and even where they are recognized, they may only form part of the formation.

1994 Group

The 1994 Group was a coalition of smaller research-intensive universities in the United Kingdom, founded in 1994 to defend these universities' interests following the creation of the Russell Group by larger research-intensive universities earlier that year. The 1994 Group originally represented seventeen universities, rising to nineteen, and then dropping to eleven. The Group started to falter in 2012, when a number of high performing members left to join the Russell Group. The 1994 Group ultimately dissolved in November 2013.

Role

The group sought "to represent the views of its members on the current state and the future of higher education through discussions with the government, funding bodies, and other higher education interest groups" and "[made] its views known through its research publications and in the media".

University Alliance, million+, GuildHE and the Russell Group were its fellow university membership groups across the UK higher education sector.

Connect (users group)

Connect, a 501(c)(6) non-profit association, is Hewlett Packard's largest independent enterprise business technology community.

Formed from the consolidation of Encompass, HP-Interex, and ITUG in May, 2008, Connect is a community of more than 70,000 HP customers, partners and employees. Through a strategic business partnership with HP, Connect engages its members through education, community, philanthropy, and advocacy to HP.

This community of IT professionals delivers information technology solutions for complex and multi-system computing environments, focusing on HP technologies, including HP-UX, HP's NonStop, Blade, HP Helion, Enterprise Storage, Enterprise Unix, OpenVMS, Linux and Windows.

Through its advocacy channels, the Connect membership provides feedback and direction to HP and their partners and has been instrumental in influencing the direction of many HP technologies.

History

The respective Users organizations have been of significant importance as to the development of technology in the so-called mini computer business (departmental computing). It has survived multiple mergers and takeovers, as well as multiple hardware platforms and software platforms. During its history it has been a tradition of self-service and mutual support amongst customers to complement the official vendor support.

Connect (sculpture)

Connect is a public art work by artist Jeremy Wolf. It is installed in Riverside Park on the east side of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Description

Connect is an anthropomorphic bronze sculpture depicting a life-sized raccoon holding a fish with its two hands. One of its back feet is raised. While the animal's fur, tail and head closely mimic a raccoon's actual features, its feet, forearms and hands have a human quality. The base on which the raccoon sits is embossed with woodland imagery like trees, insects and a salamander.

Commission process

Connect was selected by a committee assembled by the Urban Ecology Center. Four artists—Susan Falkman, Peter Flanary, Richard Taylor and Jeremy Wolf—presented their concepts and fielded questions at an open meeting held at Riverside University High School in November 2003.

Connect (album)

Connect is the fourth studio album by Australian band Sick Puppies, and was released on 16 July 2013 by Capitol Records. This was the last album to feature Lead vocalist and guitarist Shimon Moore, who was kicked out of the band on 20 October 2014.

The album debuted at No. 17 on the Billboard 200 album chart, their highest charting position to date, with 18,195 copies sold. Connect sold 16,318 albums in its first week.

A preview of the first single "There's No Going Back" was released on YouTube on 10 May 2013. The single was released on 20 May 2013.

Music

Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic highlighted that "the trio's fourth album, are varied and its themes are ambitious, tackling disconnect and politics", but it "doesn't mean the Australian trio necessarily sounds adult, however."

Critical reception

Connect garnered generally mixed reviews from music critics. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic called the album "a richer musical experience than the group's previous records", but wrote that the band was "still hampered a bit by their desperate desire to be taken seriously, but the back half of Connect, written largely on acoustic guitars, shows that their strength is not in attitude but rather in softer sonic textures." At Alternative Press, Reed Fischer felt that "Connect grates far too often to live up to its name."
