ConClave (convention)

ConClave is an annual, weekend-long science fiction convention in southeastern/central Michigan, which draws approximately 600 people. ConClave attendees share an interest in science, science fiction, fantasy, and related genres. The ConClave convention has been held each year from 1976 to 2011, and again in 2013.

While remaining true to its literary roots, ConClave celebrates fantasy and science fiction in all its myriad forms, including art, music, theatrical performance, and film. Displays include animation, television, fantasy role-play, and renaissance reenactment. Participants include gaming enthusiasts, writers of fiction, pilots of spaceships, Rennies, and Furries. ConClave is a gathering of and for all who share a sense of wonder.

Attractions

ConClave has several established traditional attractions, most notably a well-supplied Convention Hospitality Suite, a Saturday Night Costume Ball, a merchandise and art area, several tracks of programming of interest to its membership, an art auction, awards ceremonies for various groups within fandom, and a loyal following of staff and panel participants which include the SpaceTime Theater improv group and the support of the venerated Dorsai Irregulars volunteers.

Papal conclave, 1823

Following the death of Pope Pius VII on 20 August 1823, a papal conclave was held to determine his successor. The conclave began on 2 September and ended 26 days later with the election of Cardinal Annibale della Genga who became Pope Leo XII.

Pius VII had reigned as Pope for what was then considered a very long pontificate (he was elected in 1800). During his reign as Pope, the Catholic Church had faced, in the French Revolution and its aftermath, the most severe attack on its power and legitimacy since at least the Reformation – some might say since Theodosius made Christianity the state religion of the Roman Empire.

Description

During Pius VII's papacy, the cardinals had tended to divide into two groups, the zelanti and the politicani. The zelanti were more radically reactionary than the politicani and wanted a highly centralised Church and vehement opposition to the secularising reforms that had resulted in France from the Revolution spreading to the Papal States. The politicani, though anti-liberal, were much more moderate and favoured a conciliatory approach to dealing with the problems new ideologies and the incipient Industrial Revolution were creating. The leader of this faction was Pius VII's Cardinal Secretary of State, Ercole Consalvi, but the zelanti wanted a much less moderate pontiff and they set fervently to this task from the time of Pius VII's death.

Papal conclave, 1903

The Papal conclave of 1903 was caused by the death of the 93-year-old Pope Leo XIII, who at that stage was the second-longest reigning pope in history. (Pope John Paul II (r. 1978–2005) passed Leo a century later.)

It saw the election of Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto as Pope Pius X.

Background

In 1903, the 25-year pontificate of the liberal diplomat Leo XIII came to an end. For 56 years. the papacy had been led by just two men, Leo and his predecessor, Pius IX. While Pius had been a conservative reactionary, Leo had been seen as a liberal, certainly by the standards of his predecessor. As cardinals gathered, the key question was whether a pope would be chosen who would continue Leo's policies or return to the style of papacy of Pius IX.

With Leo XIII's death, Luigi Oreglia di Santo Stefano was the last surviving cardinal elevated by Pius IX. As such, he was the only elector in the 1903 conclave with previous experience of electing a pope.

Mark Duplass

Mark David Duplass (born December 7, 1976) is an American film director, film producer, actor, musician and screenwriter. He is the brother of director, writer, and actor Jay Duplass. Together, the brothers started the film production company Duplass Brothers Productions, and have directed films such as The Puffy Chair (2005), Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2011), and The Do-Deca-Pentathlon (2012). Mark and Jay co-created the HBO television series Togetherness in 2015. He is married to his The League co-star Katie Aselton.

Personal life

Duplass was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to Cynthia (née Ernst) and Lawrence Duplass. He was raised as a Roman Catholic, and attended Jesuit High School, University of Texas at Austin, and City University of New York-City College. Duplass is of part Cajun ancestry.

Duplass is married to his The League co-star, Katie Aselton. They have two daughters, Molly and Ora Duplass. He was also the lead singer of the rock band Volcano, I'm Still Excited!!
