Compo

Compo may refer to:

  • Demoscene compo, a competition involving multimedia "demo" programs
  • A character from the British TV series Last of the Summer Wine named Compo Simmonite, played by Bill Owen
  • Slang for British army field rations
  • A shorthand term for "composition ornament", a general term for molded and cast mixtures composed variously from linseed oil, pitch, whiting, hide glue, and various binders and aggregates such as horsehair, hemp or dried clay. Decorative elements are cast from this material and applied to walls, ceilings, doors, and mantels for an overwhelming decorative effect.
  • A slang word for compensation. In some countries there is a perceived culture of looking for monetary compensation for minor injuries as a form of income. In Australia the word is commonly used as slang for compensation, without any negative implications.
  • Companies

  • Compo Company was a record company in Canada which evolved into Universal Music Canada
  • Demoscene compo

A compo is a contest relating to programming, computer graphics and music that takes place within the demoscene and related subcultures. The term compo is a shortening of competition.

Compos are typically held at demoparties. The usual format is to show the competing entries sequentially with a video projector, after which the winners are chosen by public vote. In addition to party-based contests, there have also been online compos on websites and bulletin board systems.

The main competition on most demoparties is the demo compo. A typical party also includes an intro compo (for demos with a file size restriction), a music compo and a graphics compo. Other common contests include wild compo (for any kind of video material) and game development compo. Compos are often split into subcategories by technical and stylistic restrictions.

    Compo–Owenoke Historic District

The Compo–Owenoke Historic District is a 154-acre (62 ha) historic district in Westport, Connecticut that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. It was described as being "architecturally significant as an exceptionally well-preserved and cohesive early-twentieth-century beach colony which developed between 1910 and 1940."

In 1990 it included 211 contributing buildings, one other contributing site, and one other contributing object. The district includes Compo Beach and two residential areas: Compo and Owenoke (a narrow peninsula extending from the Compo area). The district lies to the west of Sherwood Island State Park and to the east of the mouth of the Saugatuck River.

Most of the houses in the district were originally built between 1910 and 1940 and were intended for seasonal (summer) occupancy.
