Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus

The Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus or CMBT is a modern bus terminus located in Chennai, India, providing outstation transport services. Spread over an area of 37 acres (150,000 m²) in Koyambedu. It is accredited with the ISO 9001:2000 quality certification for its quality management and excellence. It is located on the 100 feet (30 m) inner-ring road (Jawaharlal Nehru Road) in Koyambedu between SAF Games Village and the Koyambedu Vegetable Market. Chennai Metro Rail is planning for its coach depot behind CMBT.

History

The bus terminus originally functioned at the Broadway terminus near Madras High Court in George Town, in an area covering about 1.5 acres. With the growing population and transportation demand, a new terminus was planned at Koyambedu.

The CMBT was planned and built by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority during DMK regime Under the leadership of M. Karunanidhi at a cost of ₹ 103 crores and inaugurated on 18 November 2002 .

Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus metro station

Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus Metro station, shortly known as CMBT station, is a Metro railway station on the Line 2 of the Chennai Metro, which is currently under operation. The station is among the elevated stations coming up along corridor II of the Chennai Metro, Chennai Central–St. Thomas Mount stretch. The station will chiefly serve the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus.

Construction history

The station was constructed by Consolidated Constructed Consortium (CCCL). The station attained structural completion in December 2012. The consolidated cost of the station along with the stations of Arumbakkam, Koyambedu, Vadapalani and Ashok Nagar was ₹ 1,395.4 million.

The station

The station is being constructed as an elevated station within the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus in front of the main facade. Elevation of the platforms will be about 15 m from the ground level and the total length of the platforms will be 140 m. The station will be able to handle about 23,000 passengers an hour.
