Clinton, Massachusetts

Clinton is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 13,606 at the 2010 census.

History

Clinton was first settled in 1654 as a part of Lancaster. It was officially incorporated as a separate town on March 14, 1850, and named after the DeWitt Clinton Hotel in New York, a favorite place of the town's founders, Erastus Brigham Bigelow and his brother Horatio.

Clinton became an industrialized mill town, using the Nashua River as a source for water power. In 1897, construction began on the Wachusett Dam, culminating in the filling of the Wachusett Reservoir in 1908. This flooded a substantial portion of Clinton and neighboring towns, which had to be relocated. A noteworthy feature of the Boston metropolitan public water service was begun in 1896 in the Wachusett lake reservoir at Clinton. The basin excavated there by ten years of labour, lying 385 ft. above high-tide level of Boston harbour, had a capacity of 63,068,000,000 gallons of water and was the largest municipal reservoir in the world in 1911, yet was only part of a system planned for the service of the greater metropolitan area.

Clinton is a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Clinton in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,389 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Clinton is located at 42°25′15″N 71°41′10″W / 42.42083°N 71.68611°W / 42.42083; -71.68611 (42.420935, -71.686149).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²), all land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 7,884 people, 3,360 households, and 1,942 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,029.4/km² (5,261.5/mi²). There were 3,529 housing units at an average density of 908.4/km² (2,355.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 89.62% White, 2.32% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.76% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 4.90% from other races, and 2.08% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.07% of the population.

There were 3,360 households out of which 26.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.3% were married couples living together, 12.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.2% were non-families. 35.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 3.05.

Massachusetts ⁱ/ˌmæsəˈtʃuːsᵻts/, officially the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, is a state in the New England region of the Northeastern United States. It is bordered by Rhode Island and Connecticut to the south, New York to the west, Vermont and New Hampshire to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Over 80% of Massachusetts' population currently lives in the Greater Boston Combined Statistical Area.

Massachusetts (Bee Gees song)

"Massachusetts" is a song by the Bee Gees, released in 1967. Written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb. Robin Gibb sang lead vocals on this song and it would become one of his staple songs to perform during concerts on both Bee Gees and his solo concerts. It later appeared on their 1968 album, Horizontal.

It was their first No. 1 hit in Australia and the UK and eventually became one of the best-selling singles of all time, selling over five million copies worldwide. When the brothers wrote the song, they had never been to Massachusetts. In a UK television special on ITV in December 2011, it was voted third (behind "How Deep Is Your Love" and "You Win Again") in "The Nation's Favourite Bee Gees Song".

Writing and inspiration

The song was written in the Regis Hotel, New York City during a tour of the United States. The song was intended as an antithesis to flower power anthems of the time such as "Let's Go to San Francisco" and "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" in that the protagonist had been to San Francisco to join the hippies but was now homesick. The idea of the lights having gone out in Massachusetts was to suggest that everyone had gone to San Francisco.

This Is How the Wind Shifts is the seventh studio album by Canadian post-hardcore band Silverstein, released on February 5, 2013 through Hopeless Records.

It is the first album to not feature long time lead guitarist Neil Boshart and first to include new guitarist Paul-Marc Rousseau.

Background and recording

Silverstein announced they had signed with Hopeless on November 15, 2010. Vocalist Shane Told said the band have been "huge fans of the label since their inception". Hopeless released the band's Rescue (2011) album in April 2011 and Short Songs (2012) album in February 2012. In mid-to-late August, the band went on the Short Songs, Short Tour; the last tour they would go on before starting to work on a new album. In late September, the band announced that guitarist Neil Boshart hasn't been in the band for the preceding month and was replaced by Paul Marc Rousseau, who has previously worked for the band.This Is How the Wind Shifts was recorded at Sundown Studios in Guelph, Ontario, Canada with producer Jordan Valeriote. Valeriote also engineered and mixed the album. It was mastered by Troy Glessener at Spectre Mastering.
