C. H. Douglas

Major Clifford Hugh "C. H." Douglas MIMechE, MIEE (20 January 1879 – 29 September 1952), was a British engineer and developer of the Social Credit economic reform proposal.

Education and engineering career

C.H. Douglas was born in England in either Edgeley or Manchester, the son of Hugh Douglas and his wife Louisa Hordern Douglas. Few details are known about his early life and training; he probably served as an engineering apprentice before beginning an engineering career that brought him to locations throughout the British Empire as an employee of electric companies, railroads and other institutions. He taught at Stockport Grammar School. After a period in industry he went to Cambridge University at the age of 31 but stayed only four terms and quit without graduating. He worked for the Westinghouse Electric Corporation of America and claimed to have been the Reconstruction Engineer for the British Westinghouse Company in India (the company has no record of him ever working there), deputy Chief Engineer of the Buenos Aires and Pacific Railway Company, Railway Engineer of the London Post Office (Tube) Railway and Assistant Superintendent of the Royal Aircraft Factory Farnborough during World War I, with a temporary commission as captain of the Royal Flying Corps.

Hugh Douglas (American football)

Hugh Lamont Douglas (born August 23, 1971) is a former American football defensive end in the National Football League and former football analyst for the ESPN television network. His playing career included stints with the New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles (twice), and the Jacksonville Jaguars. In his first season in 1995, Douglas was named Defensive Rookie of the Year by the Associated Press. He goes by the nickname Turbobird.

Early life

Douglas was born in Mansfield, Ohio and attended Mansfield Senior High School.

College career

At Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, Douglas majored in elementary education and was a two-time NAIA Division I All-American, made 42 sacks in 32 games in a three-year career, turned in 13 multiple-sack games, and helped lead his team to an NAIA national championship as a sophomore. As a senior, Douglas was named Defensive Player of the Year by The Pigskin Club of Washington, D.C. He is also a member of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.

Hugh Douglas (minister)

The Very Rev Hugh Osborne Douglas KCVO, CBE,DD, TD, LLD was an eminent Church of Scotland minister in the 20th century.

He was born into an ecclesiastical family in Glasgow on 11 September 1911 and educated at Glasgow Academy and the University of Glasgow. Licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Glasgow in 1935 he was Assistant Minister at Govan Old Parish Church until 1939. He was also Minister at St John’s Leven, North Leith Parish Church and Dundee Parish Church (St Mary's) during his long career. He was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland from 1970 to 1971 and Chapel Royal from 1974 until 1981.

An Honorary Chaplain to the Queen, he died on 4 January 1986.
