Clerks

Clerks (stylized as Clerks.) is a 1994 American black-and-white comedy-drama film written and directed by Kevin Smith. Starring Brian O'Halloran as Dante Hicks and Jeff Anderson as Randal Graves, it presents a day in the lives of two store clerks and their acquaintances. Shot entirely in black and white, Clerks is the first of Smith's View Askewniverse films, and introduces several recurring characters, notably Jay and Silent Bob, the latter played by Smith himself. The structure of the movie contains nine scene breaks, signifying the nine rings of hell as in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, from which the main character, Dante, clearly derives his name.

Clerks was shot for $27,575 in the convenience and video stores where director Kevin Smith worked in real life. Upon its theatrical release, the film grossed over $3 million in theaters, launching Smith's career.

Plot

Dante Hicks, a 22-year-old retail clerk at the Quick Stop convenience store in Leonardo, New Jersey, is called into work on his day off by his boss to cover a few hours for another employee who is sick. Arriving at the store, he finds that the locks to the security shutters are jammed closed with chewing gum, so he hangs a sheet over them with a message written in shoe polish: "I ASSURE YOU; WE'RE OPEN."

Clerks. (comics)

Clerks. is a series of comics published in the late 1990s by Oni Press that continue the adventures of Dante, Randal and other characters from Kevin Smith's film Clerks Written by Smith but illustrated by varying artists, the style in these comics is very different from that of the later animated series. The books were republished in paperback and hardcover, and were compiled into Clerks. (The Comic Books), published by Image Comics in March 2000.

Each of the three original Clerks. comics, The Lost Scene, The Holiday Special and The Comic Book, has exactly 36 pages from front cover to back cover.

After seeing that Steve-Dave and Walt the Fanboy are overcharging for the extremely popular Star Wars action figures because of the re-release of the films, Dante and Randal decide to start selling them. Randal is about to order a large stock from Frank Howell at Buy Me Toys when Jay and Silent Bob stop the order, saying that all their business is being drawn towards the toys instead of the weed.

Clerks: The Animated Series

Clerks (retronym: Clerks: The Animated Series) is an American animated sitcom based on Kevin Smith's 1994 comedy of the same name. It was developed for television by Smith, Smith's producing partner Scott Mosier and former Seinfeld writer David Mandel with character designs by Stephen Silver.

Broadcast history

Only two episodes were broadcast on ABC in the year 2000 before the series was canceled. Several factors contributed to the cancellation, including low ratings, the show's not fitting in with ABC's other programming, unsuccessful test-screening to older audiences, and ABC's decision to air the shows out of order. ABC aired the fourth episode first, as opposed to the intended first episode, and then aired the second episode despite the fact that the second episode is the 'flashback' episode, and derives much of its humor from the fact that it flashes back to the first episode. Additionally, the second episode aired without the scene from "Flintstone's List", the fictional RST Video rental that spoofed Schindler's List.
