Clarendon College (Jamaica)

Clarendon College, commonly called CC, is a high school in the town of Chapelton in northern Clarendon, Jamaica. It is the oldest school in the parish and was founded on February 2, 1942 by the Rev. Lester Davy. Davy was born in 1909 and trained at The Mico University College in Kingston, Jamaica. Reverent T. Hughs convinced Davy to build a school and that he did accomplish at Rose Bank in Chapelton Clarendon. The school started with only two teachers, Rev. Davy and Mrs. Hyacinth Balford, and ten students, the school was later relocated to its current location on Chapelton Hill. Today, every year a march still takes place every year on February 2 to highlight and commemorate the legacy of Rev. Lester Davy.

Clarednon College boasts as very successful alumni who have continued to demonstrate the instilled school motto "Perstare et Praetare" (which translates "Persevere and Excel") in their various fields and professions. Clarendon College alumni can be found in leadership capacities in government, sports, medicine, business and other various fields. It also is known for it unusually large campus which extends to approximately 120 acres. The current principal of Clarendon College is David Wilson and its motto reads: "Perstare et Praestare" which means persevere and excel.

Clarendon College (Texas)

Clarendon College is a community college located in Clarendon, the seat of Donley County in the Texas Panhandle. The college operates branch campuses in Pampa and Childress.

The college was established in 1898 by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and administered as a private institution (offering baccalaureate degrees at one point) until 1927, when it became a publicly supported two-year institution.

As defined by the Texas Legislature, the official service area of Clarendon College is Armstrong, Briscoe, Childress, Collingsworth, Donley, Gray, Hall, and Wheeler counties.

History

A Methodist minister, the Reverend W. A. Allen, conceived the idea for Clarendon College in 1879, when he established Allenton Academy at old Clarendon. When the town moved to its present site on the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway in 1887, local citizens offered the Northwest Texas Methodist Conference 4 acres (16,000 m²) of land and promised to build a two-story building to relocate the college. Church leaders made it clear that they would build only if saloons were eliminated from the town. Rev. J. R. Henson, a local Methodist minister, led a campaign, which succeeded by 1902, to clear out the saloons in Clarendon's Feather Hill section and vote Donley County dry.
