The City of Ipswich is a local government area which governs the outer western portion of the Brisbane Metropolitan Area, Queensland. It covers an area of 1,090 square kilometres (420.9 sq mi) along the coast about 40 kilometres (25 mi) southwest of Brisbane CBD. Ipswich's population is estimated to grow from the current number of 190,000 people to around 435,000 by 2031.

Ipswich is centrally located in the South East Queensland region of Australia. To the east is the City of Brisbane local government area, and to the west are the rural and agricultural areas of the Brisbane, Lockyer and Fassifern Valleys. The Ipswich local government area comprises an area of 1, 090 square km.

History

Ipswich is the second-oldest local government area in Queensland, after Brisbane. On 16 November 1859, after the enactment of the Municipalities Act of 1858 in New South Wales, a petition containing 91 signatures was received by the Governor of New South Wales seeking to have Ipswich, which at the time had 3,000 people, granted municipal town status. The petition was gazetted the following day, and no counter-petition was received.

2008 City of Ipswich 400

The 2008 City of Ipswich 400 is the seventh round of the 2008 V8 Supercar season. It was held on the weekend of July 18 to 20 at Queensland Raceway in Ipswich, Queensland.

Practice

Practice featured another opportunity for teams to test endurance co-drivers with Steve Owen ending up the fastest of those drivers in the Jim Beam Racing Falcon, second only in the session to Russell Ingall. Warren Luff was fifth fastest in the second Jim Beam Falcon just ahead of Paul Radisich in the HSV Dealer Team Commodore. Next were Craig Baird (Holden Racing Team) and David Besnard (Stone Brothers Racing). Other co-drivers in the session were Dean Canto (Ford Performance Racing), Glenn Seton (Holden Racing Team), Jason Bargwanna (Rod Nash Racing), Grant Denyer (Ford Rising Stars Racing), Luke Youlden (Ford Performance Racing), Mark Noske (Tasman Motorsport), Jack Perkins (Jack Daniel's Racing), Adam Macrow driving the Team Kiwi Racing Falcon instead of for his enduro team Britek Motorsport, Brad Jones (Brad Jones Racing) and David Reynolds (HSV Dealer Team).

2010 City of Ipswich 300

The 2010 City of Ipswich 300 was the fifth race meeting of the 2010 V8 Supercar Championship Series. It contained Races 9 and 10 of the series and was held on the weekend of 1–2 May at Queensland Raceway, Ipswich, Queensland.

Background

The meeting appeared on early announced calendars, but was subsequently cancelled in January after V8 Supercar and circuit operators Queensland Raceways were unable to agree to terms. The Ipswich venue was later restored to the calendar in a deal brokered by Ipswich City Council mayor Paul Pisale which saw the Council foot the bill for some of the previously unresolvable issues. Part of the resolution saw that the event was run for the first time by V8 Supercar Events rather than the circuit operators. Crowds however were the lowest ever seen for a V8 Supercar event at this circuit, a major factor was an accident in an Australian Mini Challenge race on Saturday which saw Kane Magro's Mini tumble over the fence and into the spectator area where two spectators were injured.

Ipswich

Ipswich ⁱ/ˈɪpswɪtʃ/ is a large town in Suffolk, England, of which it is the county town. Ipswich is located on the estuary of the River Orwell. Nearby towns are Felixstowe, Woodbridge, Needham Market and Stowmarket in Suffolk and Harwich and Colchester in Essex. Ipswich is a non-metropolitan district.

The urban development of Ipswich overspills the borough boundaries significantly, with 75% of the town's population living within the borough at the time of the 2011 Census, when it was the fourth-largest urban area in the United Kingdom's East of England region, and the 38th largest urban area in England and Wales.

The modern name is derived from the medieval name 'Gippeswic', probably taken either from an Old Saxon personal name or from an earlier name of the Orwell estuary (although unrelated to the name of the River Gipping). In 2011, the town of Ipswich was found to have a population of 133,384, while the Ipswich built-up area is estimated to have a population of approximately 180,000.

Ipswich is an urban region in south-east Queensland, Australia, which is located in the south-west of the Brisbane metropolitan area. Situated on the Bremer River, it is approximately 40 kilometres (25 mi) west of the Brisbane CBD. A local government area, the City of Ipswich, which has a population of 190,000 (projected to grow to 435,000 residents by 2031) governs roughly the same portion of metropolitan Brisbane

The city is renowned for its architectural, natural and cultural heritage. Ipswich preserves and operates from many of its historical buildings, with more than 6000 heritage-listed sites.

Ipswich began in the 1820s as a mining settlement and was originally intended to be the Queensland capital but Brisbane was instead chosen because of its geographical accessibility for ships.

In 2015, Ipswich was named in the world’s Top 7 most Intelligent Communities by the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) in New York.

History

Early History

Prior to the arrival of European settlers, what is now called Ipswich was home to many indigenous language groups, including the Warpai tribe, Yuggera and Ugarapul Indigenous Australian groups. The area was first explored by European colonists in 1826, when Captain Patrick Logan, Commandant of the Moreton Bay penal colony, sailed up the Brisbane River and discovered large deposits of limestone and other minerals.

Ipswich (MBTA station)

Ipswich is a passenger rail station on MBTA Commuter Rail's Newburyport/Rockport Line, located in downtown Ipswich, Massachusetts. The station is handicapped accessible, with a mini-high platform on the northern end of the platform.

Ipswich was the terminus of the line from April 1976, when the lone round trip to Newburyport was cut, until full service was restored on October 26, 1998. Just south of the end of the platform are two auxiliary tracks that were used to store trains during that time.
