Christopher Reynolds

Christopher Reynolds was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses and ancestor of R. J. Reynolds. Other notable descendants include Mark Twain and "Lonesome" Charley Reynolds.

Early life

Reynolds was born in Gravesend, England in 1611, the son of George Reynolds and Thomasyn Church.

He arrived in the Virginia Colony along with several family members, including his brother Thomas, in 1622 aboard the John & Francis. His party settled in Warrascoyack County, Virginia, later named Isle of Wight County.

Eleven years old when he arrived, he was an indentured servant of Edward Bennett's Plantation, where he was still living in 1625. In 1626 he was documented in a legal dispute concerning the contract of other servants on the Bennett homestead.

Although there are many references to the information above, there are many who question the parents of Christopher being George and Thomasyn. After much research, the Reynolds Family Association does not accept this as fact. Christopher Augustine Reynolds

Christopher Augustine Reynolds (1834–1893) was a Roman Catholic clergyman who became the first Archbishop of Adelaide, Australia.

Born in Dublin, Ireland on 25 July 1834 or 11 August 1834, he was ordained to the priesthood on 20 April 1860. Thirteen years later, he was appointed the Bishop of the Diocese of Adelaide by the Holy See on 25 May 1873, and consecrated to the Episcopate on 28 November 1873. The principal consecrator was Archbishop John Bede Polding of Sydney, and the principal co-consecrators were Bishop Daniel Murphy of Hobart, Bishop Matthew Quinn of Bathurst, and Bishop James Murray of Maitland. Reynolds became the first Archbishop of Adelaide when the See was elevated to an archdiocese on 10 May 1887.

He died in office on 12 June 1893, aged 58.

Dr Christopher Hanby Baillie Reynolds was the first western academic to study the Maldivian language.

He wrote the first English-Maldivian dictionary: this complied with the Maldive Government’s 1970’s then Roman-transliteration scheme. The material was available to world academics from the 1970s, and finally published in 432 pages with 5000 individual entries in 2003. The dictionary complemented his 1993 150-page Maldives (World Bibliographical Series number 158) book.

During his career as a Sinhalese lecturer at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London he taught and extensively researched the Sinhalese language and its pre-1815 literature: the Sri Lankan government awarded him the Sri Lanka Ranajana medal for this.

Education interrupted by war service

Christopher Hanby Baillie Reynolds was born 29 July 1922 in St Albans, England; his father was the registrar of the Corporation of the Sons of the Clergy. Christopher's school education was at Winchester College. His Honour Mods studies including Modern Languages at New College, Oxford were interrupted in 1942 by WWII war service in Italy, taking him after the war (but still in the army) to Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) where he was fascinated by the Sinhalese language, script and culture. After the war, with a Forlong scholarship, he gained a BA degree in Sinhalese at SOAS.
