Chesterfield College is a further education further and higher education college in the town of Chesterfield in North East Derbyshire, England. The college consists of a number of campuses including Infirmary Road, Tapton House and Lockoford Lane spread over the town of Chesterfield. The college also has satellite sites in Derby, Nottingham, Manchester and Markham Vale, Chesterfield. It serves over 21,000 students of which 5,600 are full-time attends.
The building where the college is on Infirmary Road started life as a cheese factory in 1841 before it became Chesterfield and Brampton Mechanics' Institute, and it went through various incarnations, including the merger in 1984 of Chesterfield Art College and Chesterfield College of Technology, before becoming Chesterfield College. Chesterfield College become the first Associate College of Sheffield Hallam University in 1993.
Chesterfield College of Art ran independently for many years providing creative courses in a variety of subjects: Fine Art (painting and Sculpture), Graphics, Printmaking, Furniture Design, Interior Design, Exhibition Design, Townscape, Painting and Decorating, Photography, Fashion Design, Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy. It also ran courses in vehicle refinishing,industrial painting, signwriting and upholstery techniques in buildings at the Hasland site, where students attended one full day and two nights for four years.
Chesterfield is a market town and a borough of Derbyshire, United Kingdom. It lies 24 miles (39 km) north of Derby, on a confluence of the rivers Rother and Hipper. It has a population of 103,800 (2011), making it the largest town within the administrative borders of Derbyshire, and the second largest settlement in the traditional county after the unitary authority of the city of Derby.
Archaeology of the town traces its beginnings to the 1st century and the construction of a Roman fort, which became redundant and was abandoned once peace was achieved. Later an Anglian village grew up on the site; the name Chesterfield stems from the Anglo-Saxon words 'caester' (a Roman fort) and 'feld' (grazing land).
Chesterfield received its market charter in 1204 and has a moderate sized market on three days a week. The town sits on a large coalfield which formed a major part of the area's economy until the 1980s. Little evidence of the mining industry remains today.
The town's best known landmark is the Church of St Mary and All Saints, popularly known as the "Crooked Spire", which was originally constructed in the 14th-century.
Chesterfield is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2010 by Toby Perkins of the Labour Party.
The current boundaries include the town of Chesterfield, together with areas to the north towards Dronfield and to the east towards Bolsover, comprising the Borough of Chesterfield wards: Brimington North, Brimington South, Brockwell, Dunston, Hasland, Hollingwood and Inkersall, Holmebrook, Linacre, Loundsley Green, Middlecroft and Poolsbrook, Moor, Old Whittington, Rother, St Helen’s, St Leonard’s, Walton, and West. The other two Borough of Chesterfield wards (Barrow Hill and New Whittington; Lowgates and Woodthorpe) fall within the neighbouring North East Derbyshire seat. Boundary changes before the 2010 general election, when the Mid Derbyshire constituency was created, meant that Chesterfield lost New Whittington to North East Derbyshire but otherwise retained its shape.
The town of Chesterfield lies just outside the Peak District southwest of Sheffield. It is noted for the Church of St Mary and All Saints with its famous 'crooked spire' The constituency borders the constituencies of Bolsover and Derbyshire North East.
