Chertsey Bridge

Chertsey Bridge is a road bridge across the River Thames in England, connecting Chertsey to low-lying riverside meadows in Laleham, Surrey. It is situated 550 yards (500 m) downstream from the M3 motorway bridge over the Thames and is close to Chertsey Lock on the reach above Shepperton Lock.The bridge is a seven-arch tied arch white stone bridge built 1783–85 and is a Grade II* listed building. It has a weight restriction of 18 tonnes for LGVs.

The first bridge on the site was built some time after 1299 as in that year the king and his family were carried over the river by a ferry-woman called Sibille. The first reference to a bridge at Chertsey is in 1530, then a "goodly Bridg of Timber newly repaird. By 1580 it was dilapidated and the Crown, who had acquired responsibility from Chertsey Abbey, was trying to find someone on whom they could pin the bill for repairs. The documents record the dimensions as "210 feet in length and 15 feet in breadth". In 1632 the bridge, which was slanted upwards from Middlesex to Surrey, was described as like the work of a left-handed man. The slant was more annoying to navigation and passage was reported in 1774 to be very inconvenient and dangerous.

Chertsey is a town in the Runnymede borough of Surrey, England on the right bank of the River Thames where it is met by a corollary, the Abbey River and a tributary, the River Bourne or Chertsey Bourne. It is within a narrow projection of the Greater London Urban Area, aside from the Thames bordered by Thorpe Park, junction 11 of the M25 London orbital motorway, the town of Addlestone and south-western semi-rural villages that were formerly within Chertsey (Lyne, Longcross and Ottershaw). Chertsey is centred 29 kilometres (18 mi) southwest of central London, has a branch line railway station and less than 1 mile (1.6 km) north of its developed centre is the M3 (motorway).

Chertsey's built environment has the medieval tower and chancel roof of its Anglican church, a large curfew bell to English medieval folklore heroine Blanche Heriot and 18th century listed buildings such as its local and pedestrian bridge, Botleys Mansion within a public-access park and many of the buildings along its two right-angled streets forming a church/museum/café/hotel/private housing and general high street respectively. Its green spaces include sports fields, the Thames Path National Trail, Chertsey Meads and a round knoll (St Ann's Hill) the area which has much expensive domestic property such as Pyrcroft House from the 18th century and the replacement of 'Tara' from the late 20th century. Adjoining are the main areas of woodland and a few remaining agricultural and equestrian fields to the south-west and north.

Chertsey is a municipality in the regional county municipality of Matawinie in Quebec, located in the administrative region of Lanaudière.

The diocesan shrine Mary Queen of Hearts (Marie-Reine-des-Coeurs) is in Chertsey.

Lake Beaulac, the lake with the highest elevation in Lanaudière, was annexed by the municipality in 1991.

Chertsey (occasionally also recorded as the Surrey North Western/ North Western Division of Surrey) was a county constituency in Surrey which returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.

History

It was formed by the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 for the 1885 general election from part of the Mid Surrey constituency, and abolished for the February 1974 general election.

Boundaries

This seat stretched from Old Windsor in the north through Egham, Chertsey, Virginia Water, Camberley, Bagshot, Addlestone and Weybridge to Woking, Byfleet, Ripley (in the south) and to the east Hersham and Walton-on-Thames in its earlier form.

The town of Woking with its growing suburbs (such as Horsell and Maybury) was removed from the seat to create Woking in 1950. This left the northern majority of the area which on dissolution in 1974 became split east/west into Chertsey and Walton by the River Thames in the east and North West Surrey in the west.
