Chemnitz
Chemnitz (German pronunciation: [ˈkɛmnɪt͡s], Upper Sorbian: Kamjenica, Czech: Saská Kamenice, Polish: Kamienica Saska), known from 1953 to 1990 as Karl-Marx-Stadt, is the third-largest city in the Free State of Saxony, Germany. Chemnitz is an independent city which is not part of any county and seat of the Freistaat Sachsen. Located in the northern foothills of the Ore Mountains, it is part of the Central German Metropolitan Region. The city's economy is based on the service sector and manufacturing industry. Chemnitz University of Technology has around 10,000 students.
Etymology
Chemnitz is named after the river Chemnitz, a small tributary of the Zwickau Mulde. The word "Chemnitz" is from the Sorbian language (Upper Sorbian: Kamjenica), and means "stony [brook]". The word is composed of the Slavic word kamen meaning "stone" and the feminine suffix -ica.
It is known in Czech as Saská Kamenice and in Polish as Kamienica Saska. There are many other towns named Kamenica or Kamenice in areas with past or present Slavic settlement.
Bezirk Karl-Marx-Stadt
The Bezirk Karl-Marx-Stadt, also known as Bezirk Chemnitz, was a district (Bezirk) of East Germany. The administrative seat and the main town was Karl-Marx-Stadt, renamed Chemnitz after the reunification of Germany.
History
The district (named, with the city, after Karl Marx) was established, with the other 13, on July 25, 1952, substituting the old German states. After October 3, 1990, it was disestablished due to the German reunification, becoming again part of the state of Saxony.
Geography
Position
The Bezirk Karl-Marx-Stadt, correspondent to the area of the actual Direktionsbezirk Chemnitz and the southernmost one of DDR, bordered with the Bezirke of Gera, Leipzig and Dresden. It bordered also with Czechoslovakia and West German Upper Franconia.

The Bezirk was divided into 26 Kreise: 5 urban districts (Stadtkreise) and 21 rural districts (Landkreise):
Chemnitz (region)
Chemnitz (German pronunciation: [ˈkɛmnɪt͡s]) is one of the three former Direktionsbezirke of the Free State of Saxony, Germany, located in the south-west of the state. It coincided with the Planungsregion Südsachsen. It was disbanded in March 2012.
History
The Direktionsbezirk Chemnitz came into existence on 1 August 2008, and succeeded the Regierungsbezirk Chemnitz. The territory of the Regierungsbezirk Chemnitz was slightly smaller, and excluded the former district of Döbeln.
