Charlie Young

Charles "Charlie" Young is a fictional character played by Dulé Hill on the television serial drama The West Wing. For the majority of the series, he is the Personal Aide to President Josiah Bartlet.

Creation and development

The character of Charlie Young was originally to appear in the pilot, with a draft dated February 6, 1998, describing him as a "fresh-faced" 19-year-old who is taking a year off from Georgetown University to work as the President's personal aide. However, the character was written out of later drafts, and was not introduced in the show until The West Wing's third episode after the all-Caucasian main cast came under criticism from the NAACP. Aged 21 when he enters the White House, the character that made it into the show is slightly older than the early pilot draft called for, and has a somewhat modified history.

Actor Dulé Hill said he decided to audition for the role due to the involvement of Martin Sheen (who portrayed President Bartlet) and show creator Aaron Sorkin, whose work he admired. In preparing for the role, Hill met with his character's real-life counterpart, Kris Engskov, then personal aide to President Bill Clinton. Hill said the experience helped him realize how important and potentially powerful the job was.

Charlie Young (footballer)

Charlie Young (7 December 1877 – 31 March 1949) was an Australian rules football player at the Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (known then as the Victorian Football League (VFL). He became one of the club's first premiership players, playing in the 1900 VFL Grand Final, under the captaincy of Dick Wardill. Young made his debut against South Melbourne in Round 1 of the 1897 VFL season, at the Lake Oval, and topped the club's goalkicker tally in 1898. He has been given the Melbourne Heritage Number of 20, based on the order of his debut for the club. Young was named in 2008, on the club's 150th avnniversary as a legend of the game, in the 150 heroes list.

Charlie Young, sometimes spelled Charlie Yeung, is a film actress and singer. She was first noticed after appearing in a jewellery commercial with Aaron Kwok. Since then she has participated in the music videos of artists such as Hacken Lee, Takeshi Kaneshiro and Jacky Cheung and made a number of films, most famously with Tsui Hark (The Lovers, Love in the Time of Twilight, Seven Swords) and Wong Kar-wai (Ashes of Time, Fallen Angels).

She retired at the height of her career in 1997, but has since returned in 2004 in New Police Story.

Career

In 1992, she was signed on to be a singer with EMI (Hong Kong). After releasing a couple of albums with some success (she won the TVB Jade Solid Gold (1993)'s Gold Award of "The Best New Female Singer"), she made her feature-film debut in Wong Kar-wai's arthouse martial arts film Ashes of Time alongside superstars such as Leslie Cheung, Tony Leung Chiu-Wai and Brigitte Lin.

In 1994, she made her first collaboration with director Tsui Hark in the film The Lovers (梁祝), a Chinese classical tale about the Butterfly Lovers. Yeung was cast as the female lead, Zhu Yingtai opposite Nicky Wu's Liang Shanbo. Her performance received widespread critical acclaim, rising Yeung to stardom. The film today has been hailed as Yeung's most representative work to date.
