Charing Cross /ˌtʃærɪŋ ˈkrɒs/ denotes the junction of Strand, Whitehall and Cockspur Street, just south of Trafalgar Square in central London. It gives its name to several landmarks, including Charing Cross railway station, one of the main London rail terminals.

Charing Cross is named after the Eleanor cross that stood on the site, in what was once the hamlet of Charing. The site of the cross has been occupied since 1675 by an equestrian statue of King Charles I. A loose Victorian replica of the medieval cross, the Queen Eleanor Memorial Cross, was erected a short distance to the east outside the railway station.

Until 1931, "Charing Cross" referred to the part Whitehall between Great Scotland Yard and Trafalgar Square. At least one property retains a "Charing Cross" postal address: Drummonds Bank, on the corner of Whitehall and The Mall, which is designated "49 Charing Cross" (not to be confused with Charing Cross Road).

Charing Cross is the second tram stop in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, on the Vintage 'Talking' Tram network which is operated by Bendigo Tramways, under the supervision of The Bendigo Trust.

History

The Charing Cross Tram Stop was opened to the public upon the commencement of trams in Bendigo in 1890. Charing Cross remained the central-hub for trams for 82 years, until the closure of the former SEC Bendigo public tramways on the 16th of April 1972. On the 9th of December 1972, after much support from the local people of Bendigo, the State Government of Victoria and the City of Greater Bendigo Council, the former Charing Cross - Golden Square tramway was shortened and altered, to provide a tourist tram service between the Bendigo Joss House Temple at the North Bendigo Terminus and the Central Deborah Gold Mine at the Violet Street Terminus. Today, Charing Cross remains the City Centre and possibly the most used tram stop in Bendigo.

Charing Cross, Glasgow

Charing Cross is a major road junction in the Scottish city of Glasgow. It is situated north of the River Clyde at the intersection of Sauchiehall Street, St George's Road, Woodlands Road, North Street and Newton Street, as well as being at a major interchange of the M8 motorway. Formerly the gateway from the shopping area of Sauchiehall Street to the more prosperous Woodlands area, its architectural qualities were largely razed by the building of the motorway. It still marks the boundary between the City Centre and the West End of the City. Nearby landmarks include the Mitchell Library, the biggest reference library in Western Europe. Charing Cross was also part of the so-called Square Mile of Murder, the location of a series of sensational murders which scandalised Victorian society.

Charing is a mostly agricultural large village and civil parish in the Ashford District of Kent, in south-east England.; it includes the settlement of Charing Heath. It is at the foot of the North Downs and reaches up to the escarpment.

The Pilgrims' Way the M20 motorway and Charing railway station (between London Victoria and Ashford International via Maidstone) serve the parish.

History

The name Charing first appears in 799 as Ciorrincg. The name probably comes from the Anglo-Saxon word cerring, which means a bend in the road, or it may be from Ceorra-ingas, which is Anglo-Saxon, meaning people of Ceorra. The village is sited on the Pilgrims' Way from London to Canterbury, and is one day's walk from Canterbury. There are a number of old manors located around the village, such as Newlands (now a horse stud) and Pett Place. The village had a market recorded in 1285, and a fair recorded in the fifteenth century.

The Una Mestiza ("A Mestiza"), sometimes referred to as La Mestiza ("The Mestiza"), is an 1887 painting by award-winning Filipino painter and hero Juan Luna. The masterpiece is also known as La mestiza en su tocador which translates into English as The Mestiza at Her Dressing Table or Mestiza Lady at Her Dresser.Una Mestiza is also alternately called Charing. Coincidentally, this alternate title is the nickname of Luna's sister-in-law Rosario Melgar. Luna donated Una Mestiza to the Biblioteca Museu Victor Balaguer (Victor Balaguer Library Museum) of Vilanova i la Geltrú in the province of Barcelona in Spain. The Una Mestiza painting won an award at the Exposicion General de las Filipinas (Philippine General Exposition).
