Challenger (horse)

Challenger (1927–1948) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse who became a Leading sire in North America.

Racing career

At age two Challenger made two starts, winning both the Richmond and Clearwell Stakes. Following the death of Lord Dewar, nephew John Arthur Dewar inherited his horses and in 1930 he sold Challenger for £10,000, the then equivalent of US$100,000, to the American racing partnership of William Brann and Robert Castle.

Registered in the United States as Challenger II, the expensive colt never fully recovered from an injury to his hocks and had no success on American racetracks. However, as a sire he would prove to be more than worth the price Brann and Castle paid for him.

Stud record

Challenger stood at stud at his owners Branncastle Farm near Walkersville, Maryland where he proved a very successful sire and was the leading sire in North America in 1939. His best son was Challedon, a colt born in 1936 whose major wins included the Preakness Stakes, the Pimlico Special, and the Hollywood Gold Cup. Challedon was voted American Horse of the Year in 1939 and 1940 and following its formation, was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. In 1942, Challenger sired Gallorette, a filly who regularly beat her male counterparts while winning major events such as the Brooklyn and Metropolitan Handicaps. Gallorette was voted the American Champion Older Female Horse of 1946 and following its formation, was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. The following year, Challenger sired Bridal Flower who was voted the 1946 American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly.

Challenger (Memphis May Fire album)

Challenger is the third full-length album by American metalcore band Memphis May Fire which was released June 26th, 2012 via Rise Records. The band released the first single, "Prove Me Right," on May 24. They also released the 5th track on the album, "Vices," on June 13 as the second single from the album. On June 18, all of the songs were uploaded to YouTube on the Rise Records page. The album debuted at number 16 on the Billboard 200, selling more than 18,000 copies in its first week.

Challenger (video game)

Challenger (チャレンジャー, Charenjā) is a video game developed and published by Hudson Soft in 1985 for the Nintendo Famicom.

History

The game was originally planned as a port of the ZX Spectrum video game Stop the Express (later released for the Commodore 64 and MSX), which was released by Sinclair Research Ltd in 1983. Stop the Express only contained the first train level, and 3 levels were added for the release of Challenger. The game's title screen displays the slogan "Realtime Action Adventure."

The game is uniquely constructed, where the levels consist of a side-scrolling platform game, a top-view scrolling shooting game, and a fixed-screen action game. The game was also unique for its 100-screen map, which was extensive for its time. The game has been re-released as a mobile phone application, and was made available on the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console for 500 Wii Points in May, 2007. The game was also coupled with Milon's Secret Castle (Meikyū Kumikyoku (迷宮組曲) in Japan) and released for the Game Boy Advance as part of Hudson Best Collection Vol. 3 Action Collection compilation on December 22, 2005. A Mobile version was released in 2005 with several changes in gameplay.
