Center Hill Lake

Center Hill Lake is a reservoir in the U.S. state of Tennessee. It is located in Middle Tennessee near Smithville. Created by means of a dam constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1948, the lake had a dual purpose: electricity production and flood control. Center Hill Dam is 260 ft (79 m) high, and it is composed of concrete and earth structures, with 8 gates that are 50 ft (15 m) wide each. Center Hill Lake is one of four major flood control reservoirs for the Cumberland; the others being J. Percy Priest Dam, Dale Hollow Dam, and Wolf Creek Dam.

The lake, which is 64 miles (103 km) long, covers an area of 18,220 acres (73.7 km²). Center Hill Lake has a storage capacity of 762,000 acre feet (940,000,000 m³) of water. The lake has approximately 415 mi (668 km) of shoreline, with the deepest point at 190 ft (58 m). The watershed area for the lake is 2,174 square miles (5,630 km²). The lake is well known for water recreation and fishing.

Major tributaries of Center Hill Lake include the Caney Fork (the main tributary) and the Falling Water River.

Center Hill is a neighborhood located in northwest Atlanta, Georgia. Center Hill is centered on Donald L. Hollowell Highway, Hamilton E. Holmes Drive, and Simpson Road.

Fire

Saturday, 11 February 1989 at 17:42 PM Company 38 rolled up to find roughly 1/2 of an abandoned “U” shaped one-story elementary school with fire through the roof. The old building, located at 2455 Bankhead Highway NW in the Center Hill neighborhood, had been vacant for several years and was for sale by the Board of Education. Vandals had stripped the building of wiring and piping and most of the windows were broken out. Many holes were punched in the plaster on wood lathe walls in the older portions of the building so fire moved very rapidly. The original building formed the bottom of the “U” and some tough firefighting saved the legs of the “U” due to the change in construction from the wood frame with brick veneer of the original building to block walls and a Tectum roof deck over the newer sections. The lack of wood in the roof design slowed the fire slightly and gave the responding companies time to get lines laid and make a stand. Eventually the incident grew to a Three Alarm Fire including Automatic Aid from Fulton County Company 11. Control was gained at 19:07 after two Ladder Pipes, four deluge guns and numerous hand lines were operated. Firefighter Fairus Elder of Company 16 injured a knee during overhaul operations. The remainder of the building was demolished leaving only a vacant lot at the site today.
