Celtic Park is a football stadium in the Parkhead area of Glasgow, and is the home ground of Celtic Football Club. Celtic Park, an all-seater stadium with a capacity of 60,411, is the largest football stadium in Scotland and the sixth-largest stadium in the United Kingdom. It is also commonly known by Celtic fans as either Parkhead or Paradise.

Celtic was formed in November 1887 and the first Celtic Park was opened in the Parkhead area in 1888. The club moved to a different site in 1892, however, when the rental charge was greatly increased. The new site was developed into an oval shaped stadium, with vast terracing sections. The record attendance of 83,500 was set by an Old Firm derby on 1 January 1938. The terraces were covered and floodlights were installed between 1957 and 1971. The Taylor Report mandated that all major clubs should have an all-seated stadium by August 1994. Celtic was in a bad financial position in the early 1990s and no major work was carried out until Fergus McCann took control of the club in March 1994. He carried out a plan to demolish the old terraces and develop a new stadium in a phased rebuild, which was completed in August 1998.

Celtic Park (1888–92)

Celtic Park was a football ground in Glasgow, Scotland. It was the home ground of Celtic from 1888 until they moved to the modern Celtic Park in 1892. The ground staged an international match between Scotland and Ireland in 1891.

History

Located to the south-east of the Eastern Necropolis graveyard in the Parkhead district of Glasgow, Celtic Park was opened on 8 May 1888. The club had obtained a lease on the site on 13 November 1887, and over the next six months Celtic founder Brother Walfrid brought together a large group of Irish volunteers to build the ground; they erected an uncovered stand with a capacity of around 1,000, laid a nineteen-foot wide track around the pitch (with the aim of hosting cycling events), and created banking around the track to be used as terracing. Although the ground was built for Celtic, the opening match at the stadium on 8 May 1888 was between the Edinburgh-based Hibernian and Glasgow club Cowlairs, a game that ended in a 0–0 draw with a crowd of 3,000 present. Hibernian had agreed to play the opening match in order to fulfil a promise that the club's founder and manager Canon Edward Joseph Hannan had made to Brother Walfrid; however, Celtic did benefit from the gate receipts. Celtic's first match at the ground was played on 28 May 1888 against Rangers, with the home side winning 5–2 in front of almost 2,000 spectators.

Celtic Park (Belfast)

Celtic Park was a multi-use stadium in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It was used mostly for football matches and was the home of Belfast Celtic F.C.. It was also a greyhound racing course. The stadium was able to hold 90,000 spectators at its height 50,000 spectators seated. The stadium ceased to host Belfast Celtic matches when the team stopped playing competitive matches in 1949, but it continued to be a greyhound track until the 1980s. Like Celtic Park in Glasgow, Scotland, it was known as Paradise by its fans. It was the first greyhound track that opened in Ireland on 18 April 1927. The site of Celtic Park is now occupied by a shopping centre.

Celtic Park (Derry)

Celtic Park (Irish: Páirc na gCeilteach) is a GAA stadium in Derry, Northern Ireland. With a capacity of about 22,000, the ground is the main home of Derry's hurling and Gaelic football teams.

Officially recognised as the Derry GAA's main county ground, home football games are also sometimes held in Glen or Dean McGlinchey Park, Ballinascreen, which are regarded as secondary stadia, while hurling games also on occasion take place at Lavey or Fr. McNally Park, Banagher.

As well as staging inter-county matches, it is often used for hosting Derry football and hurling games at club level. The Derry Senior Football Championship final has in recent years usually been held at the ground.. The ground also hosts the Derry Intermediate Football Championship final plus the Derry Junior Football Championship final.

History

It was previously used for association football as the home of Derry Celtic F.C. in the Irish League from 1900–1913. Derry Celtic were the forerunner to Derry City, who had the opportunity to purchase the ground in 1933, but hesitated on a decision and the Derry County Board bought it ten years later.

Celtic Park (Castlebar)

Celtic Park (Irish: Páirc na gCeilteach) is an association football stadium based in Castlebar, County Mayo. It is the home ground of Castlebar Celtic who play in the Women's National League (WNL), the top tier of Irish women's football. It is also home to Castlebar Celtic's associated men's team, who play at regional level in the Mayo Association Football League.

History

Castlebar Celtic purchased Flannelly's Field in 1954 for £1,879. They also spent £123 on drainage and £400 renovating a clubhouse. Two old CIÉ buses were procured to act as dressing rooms, bringing the total expenditure to £3,000. Most of the money was raised through a series of carnivals and dances. The first match played in Celtic Park was on 4 May 1958, a challenge game between Castlebar Celtic and Castlebar A. The first competitive game in the ground was between Castlebar Celtic and Westport United the following Sunday, in the Mayo Area Final of the Connaught Cup. Frank Roache scored as Celtic won 1–0. The ground was redeveloped in 2001 with new walls and dugouts.
