Celebrity Skin (song)
"Celebrity Skin" is the tenth single by American alternative rock band Hole, released on September 1, 1998 by Geffen Records. It is the debut single from their third studio album of the same name and is Hole's most commercially successful single, being the only one to reach #1 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. In October 2011, NME placed it at number 126 on its list "150 Best Tracks of the Past 15 Years".
Background and history
The song was written and recorded in 1997 after Hole's reported hiatus in 1996 due to frontwoman Courtney Love's rising movie career. According to Love, cowriter Billy Corgan wrote the song's main guitar riff during his time at the Celebrity Skin sessions.
"Once you've stood onstage bleating your schoolgirl poetry," Love observed, "are you going to stay there, when you have the power and ability to give yourself a platform? I mean, here's the celebrity, and we all know it's stupid and ephemeral, but why not foster it? Why not feed it? Because all that it will do is give the thing that has substance – the art – more power."
Celebrity Skin
Celebrity Skin is the third studio album by American alternative rock band Hole, released worldwide on September 8, 1998 on Geffen Records and one day later in the United States on DGC Records. Hole intended the record to diverge significantly from their previous noise and grunge-influenced sound as featured on Pretty on the Inside (1991) and Live Through This (1994). The band hired producer Michael Beinhorn to record Celebrity Skin over a nine-month period that included the band recording in California, New York and the United Kingdom.
The album was the band's first studio release to feature bassist Melissa Auf der Maur following the death of former bassist Kristen Pfaff in June 1994. Unlike the material on the band's previous albums, the songs on Celebrity Skin were composed by a number of musicians instead of solely frontwoman Courtney Love and lead guitarist Eric Erlandson. The Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan contributed largely to the album's writing process and others, including Auf der Maur's former bandmate Jordon Zadorozny, contributed to its composition. Love named the album and its title track after a poem she had written, which was heavily influenced by T.S. Eliot's "The Wasteland".

Celebrity Skin (magazine)
Celebrity Skin is a pornographic magazine which specializes in showcasing images, either photographs or movie and TV screencaps, of nude or semi-nude celebrities. It is not to be confused with its rival Celebrity Sleuth. The magazine has ceased publication.
Origin
Celebrity Skin was a spin-off publication of High Society magazine first published in 1986. Editor Gloria Leonard is credited with the idea to first publish revealing or scandalous images of celebrities in the magazine. The success and increased sales of issues with "celebrity skin" led to the new publication.
Lawsuits
Over the course of its run, Margot Kidder, Ann-Margret and Barbra Streisand unsuccessfully attempted to sue the magazine after it published nude photos of them.
Jennifer Aniston
The September 1999 issue of Celebrity Skin contained photographs of Jennifer Aniston sunbathing topless in her back garden. The photographs also appeared in the December 1999 issues of High Society and Celebrity Sleuth. The April 1999 issues of the Italian magazine Eva Tremila and the British newspaper Daily Sport carried the pictures, as well as the May 31–June 6 issue of the French publication Voici. Aniston filed a lawsuit against Francois Naverre, who took the photos in February 1999. Aniston also filed suit against Man's World Publications and Crescent Publishing Group for publishing the photos.
