CEDO

CEDO is the Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans. The acronym CEDO comes from the Spanish name: Centro Intercultural de Estudios de Desiertos y Océanos.

Located in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Mexico, CEDO is a center for the study of the ecosystems of the Sonoran Desert and the Gulf of California.

History

In 1975, CEDO's current Executive Director Peggy Turk Boyer visited Puerto Peñasco with professors John Hendrickson and Don Thomson of the University of Arizona's Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) Department, as part of the UA's thriving marine biology program. They and their students conducted field activities out of a small beach house beside an experimental shrimp mariculture enterprise which was operated jointly by the UA's Environmental Research Lab (ERL) and the Centro de Investigación en Ciencia y Tecnología of the Universidad de Sonora (CICTUS).

Carl Hodges, ERL's first director and founder of the affiliated nonprofit Desert Development Foundation (DDF), and CICTUS director, Xico Murrieta envisioned a new organization called the Institute for Deserts and Oceans (IDO). It would operate out of a new facility located in the Las Conchas housing development east of the shrimp labs and would be supported with profits from the shrimp mariculture commercial enterprise. Nicholas Yensen was hired as the first director in 1978. After a successful fundraising campaign, Yensen was able to convert the unfinished Las Conchas recreation center and office building into a simple functional biological field station.

Underdogs (2013 animated film)

Underdogs (known as Metegol in Argentina and The Unbeatables in the United Kingdom) is a 2013 Argentine 3D computer-animated fantasy sports comedy adventure film co-written and directed by Juan J. Campanella. The film is inspired on the short story Memorias de un wing derecho (Memoirs of a Right Wing) by the Argentine writer Roberto Fontanarrosa. Gaston Gorali, co-writer and producer of the film, and Eduardo Sacheri, who worked on the script of Campanella's The Secret in Their Eyes, developed the screenplay with Campanella.

The film is an Argentine production, and was released in Argentina on 18 July 2013, setting an all-time record for an Argentine film opening at the box-office. Costing $21 million, the film is the most expensive Argentine film of all time, and the most expensive Latin American animated feature ever.

The film received indecisive and mixed reviews, with it having a 64% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 14 reviews, but a 38 out of 100 based on 5 reviews on Metacritic, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".

Underdogs (album)

Underdogs is the second full-length studio album by the alternative rock band Matthew Good Band. It was released in 1997 on Mercury Records.

Commercial and critical performance

Underdogs was the band's most successful album yet, being certified platinum in Canada and being nominated for "Best Rock Album" at the 1999 Juno Awards. By March 2003, the album had sold 200,000 units in Canada.

In a 2000 poll by music magazine Chart, Underdogs was voted the 18th Greatest Canadian album of all time.
