Castle Point

Castle Point is a local government District with borough status in south Essex, centred 29.8 miles (48 km) from London. The Borough comprises the towns and villages of Canvey Island, Hadleigh, South Benfleet, and Thundersley, the site of the council headquarters.

The national land use survey carried out for the following census in 2005 by the Office for National Statistics showed over 50% (27.070 square kilometres (10 sq mi)) of the borough to be within its non-gardens definition of green space: here a mixture of agricultural fields, natural marshland and sports grounds/courses and to have the second lowest area in England covered by non-domestic buildings: 0.55 square kilometres (0.21 sq mi). More than one fifth of the area, 9.6 square kilometres (3.7 sq mi), was made up by the second-highest category of use: gardens. The district ranked 295th in area of the 325 districts in England in area. The district relies heavily on other parts of Essex including factories and ports in Tilbury, the large town of Southend on Sea and on Central London for its largest sources of employment and as it has areas of seaside resort the median age of residents was in 2011 greater than the national average: 7% of its residents were aged 75 to 84 compared with 5.5% nationally.

Castle Point is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2010 by Rebecca Harris of the Conservative Party.

History

This seat was created in 1983, primarily from the former seat of South East Essex. Covering the area of Canvey Island, Hadleigh, South Benfleet, and Thundersley and in all but one election has been won by a Conservative candidate, passing to Labour once, in the 1997 election. The former MP defeated in 1997, Bob Spink, regained the seat in 2001. He was re-elected in 2005 but subsequently resigned from the Conservative Party on 22 April 2008. Spink briefly joined the United Kingdom Independence Party but resigned the whip shortly afterwards and sat as an Independent MP. In the 2010 election, Spink lost in Castle Point to the Conservative candidate, Rebecca Harris.

Boundaries

Following their review of parliamentary representation in Essex, the Boundary Commission for England has created a Castle Point constituency based entirely within the boundaries of the district council of the same name. The seat is one of only a very few to undergo 1990s and 2000s boundary reviews without any changes at all, having seen population growth in line with the average seat (which is slightly larger), including development in the designated development plans of the Thames Gateway.

Castle Point

Castle Point is the highest point in Hoboken. The name is a corruption of "Castille Point", due to its supposed resemblance to the Castilian coast in Spain. To early navigators, the high serpentine crag jutting over the river reminded them of a miniature Rock of Gibraltar (although the Rock of Gibraltar is actually in Andalusia, not Castile which has no coast). The land was bought at public auction in 1804 by Col. John Stevens, who built his estate there. After his death, his son Edwin Augustus Stevens took responsibility of the estate and in 1853 built a 40-room mansion, the "Stevens Castle", on land adjacent to the point. It was acquired by Stevens Institute of Technology in 1910 and served as an administrative and residential building until 1959. Castle Point is still part of the Stevens campus. On the side of Castle Point is historic Sybil's Cave.
