Cartoon Network

Cartoon Network is an American basic cable and satellite television channel that is owned by the Turner Broadcasting System division of Time Warner. The channel airs primarily animated programming, ranging from action to animated comedy. It was founded by Betty Cohen and launched on October 1, 1992.

It is primarily aimed at children and teenagers between the ages of 7–16, and also targets older teens and adults with mature content during its late night daypart Adult Swim, which is treated as a separate entity for promotional purposes and as a separate channel by Nielsen for ratings purposes. A Spanish language audio track for select programs is accessible via SAP; some cable and satellite companies offer the Spanish feed as a separate channel.

As of February 2015, Cartoon Network is available to approximately 96.4 million pay television households (82.8% of households with television) in the United States.

History

Development

On August 4, 1986, Ted Turner's Turner Broadcasting System acquired Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer/United Artists from Kirk Kerkorian; due to concerns over the debt load of his companies, on October 17, 1986, Turner was forced to sell MGM back to Kerkorian after approximately only 74 days of ownership. However, Turner kept much of MGM's film and television library made prior to May 1986 (as well as some of the United Artists library) and formed Turner Entertainment.

Cartoon Network (Italy)

Cartoon Network is an entertainment television channel created by Turner Broadcasting System Europe, a unit of Time Warner which primarily shows animated programming. The Italian version was launched on 31 July 1996.

History

The channel appeared for the first time in 1996 on the digital satellite platform TELE+ and Stream TV in English, but it was in early 1998 that the channel started transmitting in Italian. It became available on the Sky Italia platform in 2003 and in late 2008 became available on the Mediaset Premium platform.

Cartoon Network (Pakistan)

Cartoon Network is a cable and satellite television channel created by Turner International Pakistan, a unit of Time Warner which primarily shows animated programming. The channel officially launched on April 2, 2004. The channel has two feeds for Pakistan and Bangladesh. It is also available in Iran, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan. Cartoon Network Pakistan timings are according to Pakistan Standard Time (+5 GMT). It also has another time shift version (+6 GMT), which is available in Bangladesh.

History

The channel launched on April 2, 2004 as a separate feed dedicated for Pakistani viewers. Programs broadcast on this feed are almost identical to the programs broadcast on Cartoon Network India, with the exception of a few shows. It has a translation in some areas. The channel is basically a relay version of Cartoon Network (India). The major differences between the Indian version and the Pakistan version are timings, advertisements and contest addresses.

2005 - 2008

In 2005 the bumpers were replaced with 3-D animations of a 'city' that all the cartoon characters from the show lived in. Show-specific bumpers were replaced with 3-D animations of a well-known scene from the particular show. The retro, checkerboard logo was replaced with the 'CN' city-style logo of today. In 2006, several new Cartoon Network originals premiered, including Robotboy, The Life and Times of Juniper Lee, and Camp Lazlo. The channel kept this brand until 2008.

Cartoon Network (India)

Cartoon Network is a television channel available on Dish TV, STAR India, Tata Sky, Airtel digital TV and other major Indian satellite and cable television providers. Distributed by Turner Broadcasting System (a unit of Time Warner Inc.) specifically for the South Asian region, the channel primarily airs animated shows in four different languages: Hindi, English, Tamil and Telugu. It is based on the original American version of the channel and started airing on 1 May 1995 as the first kids' channel in India.

History

Cartoon Network started broadcast in India in 1995 as a dual-channel with Cartoon Network initially operating from 5:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Turner Classic Movies (formerly TNT) taking up the remainder of the daily schedule. Later the time slice of Cartoon Network was increased up to 9 p.m. On 1 July 2001, Cartoon Network India became a separate 24-hour channel which broadcasts in India, Nepal, Bhutan.

In 2004, a separate feed of the channel dedicated to Pakistani and Bangladeshi viewers was started. Programmes broadcast on this feed are different from the Indian feed. It has a translation in some areas. The channel was basically a relay version of Cartoon Network India in the start which is not the case now. Cartoon Network India is the only channel which aired the English dubbed version of Heidi in 2001. This show has not premiered on any other Cartoon Network channel worldwide.
