Anne

Anne, alternatively spelled Ann, is a form of the Latin female given name Anna. This in turn is a representation of the Hebrew Hannah, the name of the mother of the prophet Samuel. Anne is a common name in France.

It is sometimes used as a male name in the Netherlands (for example Anne de Vries). It has also been used for males in France (Anne de Montmorency) and Scotland (Lord Anne Hamilton).

Ann (1797 ship)

Ann (or Anne) was built of teak in Batavia in 1797. How she came into British hands is currently unclear. In 1809 she made a voyage transporting convicts to New South Wales for the British government. On her return voyage she carried cargo for the British East India Company (EIC) from Calcutta to London. She then became a West Indiaman, trading between London and Jamaica.

Convict transport and EIC voyage (1809-1811)

Ann left Spithead on 25 August 1809, under the command of Captain Charles Clarke. She arrived at Port Jackson on 21 June. Before his departure, Clarke received a letter of marque on 21 June 1809.Ann stopped in at Rio de Janeiro around 15 November and arrived at Port Jackson on 17 or 27 February 1810.

Ann transported 200 male convicts, but unloaded two before departure. One died on the way and she landed 197 in Sydney. A detachment of the 73rd Regiment of Foot provided the guard. Among her passengers were the Reverend Samuel Marsden and the Maori chief Ruatara.

After she left Port Jackson Ann sailed for Bengal, and was at Calcutta by 21 September 1810. Homeward bound, she passed Saugor on 24 November, reached St Helena on 20 February 1811, and on 26 April was at East India Dock, in London.

Mons Bradley

Mons Bradley is a lunar mountain massif in the Montes Apenninus range, along the eastern edge of the Mare Imbrium. It is located to the west of the crater Conon. To the west of this peak is the Rima Bradley rille. (See below.)

The selenographic coordinates of this peak are 21°44′N 0°23′E / 21.73°N 0.38°E / 21.73; 0.38. It has a maximum diameter of 30 km across the base, and rises to a height of about 4.2 km. It is named after the English astronomer James Bradley (1692–1762).

Rima Bradley

This is a graben-type rille located in the southeastern part of the Mare Imbrium, near the Montes Apenninus range. To the northwest is the prominent crater Archimedes. This rille follows a course to the southwest, starting at the Palus Putredinis, and cutting through a hummocky region. To the east of the northern end of this rille is Rima Hadley and the landing site of the Apollo 15 mission.

This feature is centered at selenographic coordinates 23°48′N 1°12′W / 23.8°N 1.2°W / 23.8; -1.2, and it has a maximum diameter of 161 km. The rille was named for the nearby Mons Bradley. Several tiny craters near this rille have been assigned names by the IAU. These are listed in the table below.

Carrie (song)

"Carrie" is a 1987 hit single and power ballad released by the Swedish hard rock band Europe. It was the third single released internationally from the album The Final Countdown, and it is their highest charting song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart—peaking at #3 (#1 on the Radio and Records chart) during the fall of 1987. The track on the B-side of the 7" single was "Love Chaser".

The song was co-written by vocalist Joey Tempest and keyboardist Mic Michaeli in 1985. An early version of the song that consisted of just keyboards and vocals, was played on a tour in Sweden the same year. The demo version was similar, but the final version that was included on the album The Final Countdown included the whole band playing.

On Europe tours following the band's reunion in 2003, an acoustic version of "Carrie" has been played, with Tempest performing the song on an acoustic guitar. In recent years, however, the band has switched back to the arrangement of the album version. A performance of the acoustic version can be found on the Live from the Dark DVD and a performance of the album version can be found on the Live at Shepherd's Bush, London DVD.

Carrie (1976 film)

Carrie is a 1976 American supernatural horror film based on Stephen King's 1974 novel of the same name. The film was directed by Brian De Palma with a screenplay by Lawrence D. Cohen.

The film received two Academy Award nominations, one for Sissy Spacek in the title role and one for Piper Laurie as her abusive mother. The film featured numerous young actors – including Nancy Allen, William Katt, Amy Irving, and John Travolta – whose careers were launched, or escalated, by the film. It also relaunched the screen and television career of Laurie, who had not been active in show business since 1961.

Carrie was the first of more than 100 film and television productions adapted from, or based on, the published works of Stephen King.

Plot

Carrie White (Sissy Spacek), a shy and friendless 17-year-old girl, is the scapegoat and outcast of her school. At home, she is abused by her mentally unstable mother Margaret (Piper Laurie), who is a Christian fundamentalist.

While in the showers after gym class, Carrie unexpectedly experiences her first period and fears she is bleeding to death. The other girls, including Chris Hargensen (Nancy Allen) and Sue Snell (Amy Irving), add to her shame and humiliation by pelting her with tampons and sanitary pads. The gym teacher Miss Collins (Betty Buckley) intervenes and as Carrie becomes more frantic, a light bulb bursts in the showers.

Carrie (2013 film)

Carrie is a 2013 American supernatural horror film, directed by Kimberly Pierce, and is the third film adaptation of Stephen King's 1974 novel of the same name. The film was produced by Kevin Misher, with a screenplay by Lawrence D. Cohen & Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. The film was released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Screen Gems on October 18, 2013. The film stars Chloë Grace Moretz as the titular Carrie White, and Julianne Moore as Carrie's mother, Margaret White, Judy Greer as Ms. Desjardin, Portia Doubleday as Chris Hargensen, Gabriella Wilde as Sue Snell, Ansel Elgort as Tommy Ross, and Alex Russell as Billy Nolan.

The film is a re-imagining of the classic horror story about Carrie White (Moretz), a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother (Moore), who uses her telekinetic powers with devastating effect after being a victim of a cruel prank at her senior prom. The film was a financial success, grossing $85 million at the box-office, however received mixed reviews from film critics and audiences. Critics praised the performances of the cast, but criticized the film's predictability and lack of scares.

Styx (Windmill game)

Styx was originally created by Windmill Software in 1983 and released as a copy-protected, bootable 5.25" floppy disk for the IBM PC/XT.

It is a clone of the 1981 arcade game Qix. Three significant differences are: the caterpillar (that can grow in size in later rounds), the introduction of diagonal movement (in contrast to Qix allowing only four directions), and the X1/X5/X10 multiplier that would color a claimed area corresponding to the color of the multiplier (also awarding that many points).

Styx used the same game engine as two other Windmill Software games, The Exterminator and Moonbugs, and these were some of the few programs to make use of the 16-color quasi-graphics CGA mode (normally the CGA could only use 4 or 2 color graphics). However, it was possible to play on a monochrome monitor as long as the graphics card also supported color graphics (e.g. a Genoa Color Graphics Card).

Styx, The Exterminator, and Moonbugs set CGA 320x200x4 mode on the title screen by directly manipulating the video registers; this causes them to display a screen full of garbage on later video cards. The in-game graphics also will only occupy half the screen due to technical differences between CGA and EGA/VGA, however the games can be patched to work correctly on VGA.
