Caroline Wilson

Caroline Wilson (born Julia Caroline Wilson, 7 June 1960) is a multiple Walkley Award winning Australian sports journalist. She is the chief football writer for Melbourne's The Age newspaper, also appears on 3AW's pre-match AFL discussion, is a panellist on Nine Network's Footy Classified, and an occasional panellist on the ABC program Offsiders.

Career

Wilson began covering football in 1982. She has covered numerous sports, but specialises in AFL football, and has been chief football writer for The Age since 1999. Wilson was the first woman to cover Australian Rules football full-time.

She had five years with the Sunday Age between 1989 and 1994.

Caroline has also worked in radio hosting the afternoon program for 3AW between 1994 and 1996.

Wilson appeared every Wednesday night on White Line Fever on Fox Footy, until the show was cancelled in 2006 following the dissolution of Fox Footy Channel.

Media awards

In 1989 Wilson became the first woman to win the AFL's gold media award.

Caroline Clegg

Caroline Clegg (née Wilson) is the wife of Gordon Clegg. Caroline and Gordon had met in 1982, and got engaged. Gordon introduced Caroline to his mother Betty Turpin. Betty took a shine to Caroline, although felt Gordon was rushing into things. Nevertherless, they got married later on, although it was a quick registry office affair and Betty was not told about it until after it happened. In 1985, their son Peter was born. In 1995, Caroline attended Betty's wedding to Billy Williams alongside Gordon and Peter. Seven years later in 2002, they attended the retirement party for Betty at the Rovers Return where she had been an employee since 1969. Caroline was not pleased when Gordon offered for Betty to come and stay with them in London. Betty moved in with them but soon felt isolated and unwanted. She left to return to her home in Weatherfield. When Betty died in 2012, Caroline did not attend the funeral with Gordon for unknown reasons.
